Money
The Money Trail, Canadian Taxpayers Are Footing The Bill For The Antismoking Lobby!
Most Canadians probably don't know that the antismoking special interest lobby is funded by taxpayer dollars. Groups like the Nonsmokers Rights Association use federal and provincial tax dollars to "influence public opinion," to work "toward a tobacco-free society" and for "organizational development".
These groups are far from objective -- they have a bias and an agenda that is certainly not shared by all Canadians. They are Special Interest Groups.
Above all, they are groups whose real purpose seems to be the spreading of intolerance and resentment towards smoking, in the conviction that the elimination of tobacco use justifies any means. These groups bully opposition while promoting repressive laws that create precedents for further limitations of personal freedom, while portraying junk science as final and indisputable evidence of their absurd claims.
To add insult to the injury of the taxpayers, not only does the government give them money for their activities, government then turns around and uses the work and claims of these groups as if the information came from an objective source. How, for example, does the B.C. Health Ministry determine that 20 kids start smoking each day in B.C.? Answer: the Non-Smokers Rights Association told them so!
In examining these grants, it is important to consider that the figures reported below are just a part of the public money that these organizations receive.
