This pamphlet published in 1954 has had Anti wetting her pants ever since. The author, science writer Donald G. Cooley, not unreasonably sought information about cigarettes from the companies that manufactured them. Big Tobacco’s Public Relations representatives obliged and also assisted in finding a publisher, the well-known Fawcett Publications, which presented the long essay as a special release by its then-popular True magazine. To Anti, of course, the influence of the PR folks made Smoke Without Fear a categorical menace.
Really, the essay presents a refreshingly calm and reasoned perspective, and is little dated a half century and more after its release. The basic truth about tobacco has not changed. There are risks to overindulgence, in eating, drinking, smoking, and most things. Moderation is wise in all things but most of all in thinking. That is what Anti, the screaming hysteric of our times, will never, ever understand. Our Anti readers (yes, we know you prowl here) are invited to wet their pants once again in reaction to our presentation of Smoke Without Fear here at the FORCES Library Portal. To all our sane readers, we sincerely recommend, read this golden oldie and enjoy. Download of the thirty-plus pages may take a minute or so.
