Getting The Most From The Evidence Portal

The Scientific Evidence Portal contains many features designed to assist the user in finding and understanding the evidence currently available in the smoking debate; the features of this portal are explained below;

  • Search By Category
    On the right side of each page is a menu allowing users to search the evidence by category, search results inside these areas will only return studies that are relevant to that category. This is useful for those who wish to find only studies that concern general aspects, e.g. studies that are only relative to active smoking.

  • General Search
    On each page of the evidence portal there is a search box; this facility acts slightly differently depending upon which part of the portal you are in. For a full search of the entire evidence archive you should use the search box on the home page of the portal. For searches limited to specific categories use the search boxes inside the individual category pages.

  • Search Criteria
    Within any search box in the portal you can enter different types of search phrase, an example might be; "Effects of smoke on bar workers". Results will be sorted and returned according to relevancy of your search phrase. Additionally you may perform searches on author or title and you may enter only part of the title or one or more of the authors.

  • Glossary
    A Glossary is available outlining the terms used within the study documents.

  • Additional Information
    Many of the studies provide links to 'Further Information'; this provides more on the study in question.

  • Other Links
    Further links below the categories on the right hand side of each page provide further resources for general information including charts and graphs of the studies.
