NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE SMOKING AND HEALTH PROGRAM

Status Reports.

The Tobacco Working Group was established in 1968 to advise the National Cancer Institute smoking and health program. This group of eminent scientists represents affiliations including the tobacco industry, the academic world, private research organizations, the United States Department of Agriculture, the National Heart and Lung Institute, and the National Cancer Institute. Their qualifications cover the entire range of specialties in the field: Agronomy and tobacco genetics, tobacco curing, cigarette manufacturing, tobacco and smoke chemistry, bioassay of smoke and smoke condensate, and the pathology and epidemiology of smoking in man.

The efforts of this group were specifically directed at the identification of individuals most likely to develop smoking related cancers and diseases, to means of reducing their risk, and to the development of cigarettes that may be inherently less hazardous.
