The media is strangely silent when the one special interest group that is most despised by the American public donates astronomical amounts of cash to politicians in the hope of increasing its obscenely bulging coffers.  The rapacious Trial Lawyers have wrought far more damage to this country than any industry.  They have perverted the rule of law into a mechanism more conducive to massive shakedowns than pursuits of justice.  By their tactics, mimicking criminal organizations, they have effected the most massive transfer of wealth and property from citizens to special interests in this country's history.

The American Tort Reform Foundation has stepped into the void and has taken over the media's function to inform.  The group has taken upon itself the daunting task of tracking the cash the lawyers pass out to their favorite politicians.  No segment of these overcompensated leaches has more cash to spread around than the sharks that shook down the tobacco industry and their consumers.  With billions to play with, the tobacco lawyers are primarily lavishing their ill-gotten gains upon Democrats and the Democratic National Committee.  They have looted smokers and now seek to expand their political influence to loot us all. 

GOVERNMENT/MEDIA COMPLEX Added January 16 - The term was coined by radio talk host Michael Savage, San Francisco radio station KSFO, to describe the unprecedented collaboration between the government and all levels of media.  In the old days - not really all that long ago - heavily smoking and drinking reporters reveled in digging out the truth from corporations and government agencies that wished to keep the people ignorant.  Today the journalists dutifully rewrite the press releases issued by the elite and rarely dig beneath the surface on any issue.

From guns to global warming, the press parrots the government as slavishly as did the Soviet Union's Pravda.  On tobacco, the press marches lockstep with the government, printing its lies and ignoring any dissent.  Never has the mainstream media been held in such low esteem.  That contempt is reflected in the declining ratings of Network News and the plummeting subscription rates of the major newspaper dailies.

Now we find that the federal government is butting into television entertainment, at the invitation of the networks.  From Salon, not a member of the Government/Media Complex, comes the disturbing tale of White House script approval for some of the networks most popular shows.

As always during this era of government merging with private institutions, the goal of the White House network collaboration is a "worthy cause".  The networks are compelled to air free Public Service Announcements on the behalf of the failed War On Drugs.  If appropriate anti-drug messages are inserted in television comedies and dramas, the networks can then eliminate the PSA's and sell the time slot at commercial rates. The effect of this deal is that flunkies at the White House are reviewing scripts and offering suggestions.

Although the focus of the Salon piece is on the War On Drugs, it doesn't take a genius to prognosticate that an arrangement between government censors and the networks involving anti-tobacco messages is a very real possibility.  From Hillary Clinton down to the goons at the American Lung Association, there is a constant harping from the totalitarians that Hollywood must hop upon the anti-tobacco bandwagon.  As Salon has uncovered, when given the chance to exchange their independence for financial gain, the media will always go for the gold. 

READER'S DIGEST: HYPOCRISY AS AN UNDERSTATEMENT Added January 30, 2000 - TRIAL LAWYERS ON TRIAL: LAWSUIT FEVER CHEATS CONSUMERS, TAINTS DEMOCRATIC PROCESS - "How would you like to make $130,000 an hour? It's little wonder that, as they pocket colossal contingency fees, America's trial lawyers say the current justice system works just fine. But as high-powered attorneys scoop up billions from tobacco settlements -- and begin their hunt for the next target industry -- Reader's Digest magazine warns it is the little guy who ultimately pays for the nation's rising tide of baseless litigation."

"A growing number of critics -- and not just corporate defendants -- contend the legal gravy train is roaring out of control. Unfortunately, trial lawyers are using their vast financial clout to influence politicians and thwart much-needed reforms."

These are excerpts from an article published in The Reader's Digest. It is interesting to notice that the Reader's Digest has been (and still is) rabidly antismoking. While we are pleased to see that articles against the disgusting abuses by the anti-tobacco lawyers make it to the Digest, we cannot help but remember that the Digest itself has substantially contributed to the propaganda against smoking, the social dislike of smokers by non-smokers, and helped to instigate the public opinion against the tobacco industry -- not to mention the relentless publication of scientific and political misinformation on this subject -- for many years.

The moral question for the Digest is: what sense does it make to systematically instigate a thief to steal and then cry foul about his wrongdoing?

MORE OUTRAGE ABOUT THE ANTITOBACCO CARTEL'S ENEMY LIST Added January 13, 2000 - WAITING TO INHALE - At the time when the outrageous use of public money to compile enemy lists became public (click here for more info), we missed this interesting article because we were taking our deserved Christmas break.

' Meanwhile, like all good enemies lists, this one does not discriminate. It indicts big shots and small fry alike. Thus you may find on it the name and address of a man in Colorado who "appears to work for a research firm that represents the tobacco industry." You may also find the name and address of a man in Sacramento who "contacted the Chino Hills, Calif., city clerk, seeking information on the sponsor of a smokefree ordinance pending in Chino Hills." Obviously it took a lot of detective work to uncover miscreants like that, and as the Los Angeles Daily News reported last week, the tax-exempt Non-Smokers Rights Foundation spent part of the $1.2 million "monitoring people who attended and spoke on tobacco issues at city council meetings in cities throughout the state." '

Scrambling to defend itself, the ANR and its apologists are making the outrageous claim that keeping tabs on and intimidating private citizens is an appropriate way to spend tax dollars. The California Department of Health Services backs up its irresponsible decision to fund the enemies list by asserting that the people of California support the Gestapo tactics of the Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights. Such slander heaped on the citizens of California is yet one more proof that the Health Department's Tobacco Control Section must undergo a complete and independent audit. The undemocratic activities of the ANR and its Public Health patrons are a blight that must be eradicated.

Incidentally, so far no answer to the letter written by our CEO Gian Turci to Americans for Non-Smokers Rights Foundation. Actually, we don't expect an answer, for they CANNOT answer without reveling ther antitobacco cartel's frauds and arrogance.

PROFILE OF A FAMOUS REPRESENTATIVE OF THE ANTITOBACCO CARTEL: DOKTOR KROOK, .CON Added January 10, 2000 - THE FOX IN 'CHICK' KOOP - So, Doktor Koop, such champion of the war against tobacco; such spreader of junk science and false information using his [past] reputation to bambloozle America on a corrupt agenda. A man of such integrity; he was totally outraged at the corruption of the tobacco industry.

Wake up, America: Doktor Koop is a con artist, and that's why he has embraced antitobacco in a first place. Honest people do not embrace antitobacco unless they are either dumb or uninformed. Doktor Koop is neither. He got rich thumbing his nose at those who gave him trust.

And how much payola did Doktor Koop get from the pharmaceutical industry to LIE about the health effects of tobacco while promoting smoking cessation devices?! HOW TRIAL LAWYERS MAINTAIN THEIR POLITICAL POWER WHILE LAUGHING AT THEIR VICTIMS ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK Added January 8, 2000 - THEY SAY THEY REPRESENT "THE LITTLE GUY." "It is nothing for this law firm to pay $200,000, $300,000 a year toward political campaigns," he says. "And that was before the tobacco money." Levin smiles, then begins to laugh. Buoyed by the tens of billions in fees they expect to receive from the autumn 1998 settlement between the states and the tobacco industry, trial lawyers such as Levin will no doubt be spending more in the future on the political process than they already are. And that's plenty. '

Antitobacco and its corrupt accomplices in the medical profession have paved the way for these sharks to rob citizens and private industry while controlling politics. Is any fool out there who thinks that democracy is still alive in America?

- The criminal British Columbia government continues its persecution of smokers based on the totally fraudulent ETS "evidence" on the dangers of passive smoking. Effective January 1st, 2000, "Health-care workers must refuse to treat clients who are smoking in their own homes, and cleaning staff and food-servers are not allowed to enter a smoker's hotel room under new Workers' Compensation Board regulations."

Don't you love the title? Smoking "restraints"! Letting patients suffer and even die if they are smokers is quite OK for these Canadian criminals. When will these bastards decide to tattoo smokers? Is any Nazi (health or otherwise) disagreeing with that approach? How can anyone with an ounce of humanity, let alone integrity, be indifferent to this? When will the citizens, business people, and smokers themselves understand that it is useless to argue with totalitarians who, like all fascists, only understand force, and start cleaning up their house from the anti-tobacco scum?

Since THERE IS NO DANGER IN SECONDHAND SMOKING, the only remaining reason is the true reason: the state is engaged in persecution activities against human rights. THE HEROES OF THE ANTI-TOBACCO CARTEL: HEALTH NAZIS LOVE WIGAND, AND HERE IS WHY Added December 15, 1999 - 'CERTAIN EVENTS HAVE BEEN FICTIONALIZED'

- Don't be fooled by the title of this article. What the National Post says about the new Disney's here is real - and the antismoking bastards know that too, starting from Canada Health Minister Alan Rock down to the last anti-tobacco lackey.

The reality is even more down to earth than this excellent article describes - though that is still hard to accept, unfortunately, for too many people: those who are actively involved in antismoking campaigns are criminals of the like of the real hero of The Insider. The lie, cheat, falsify, and they take advantage of the innocent. When proven to be liars, they simply lie more and more, and laugh at those who naively still believe they can prove their wrongdoing. Frankly, they don't care at all if they are proven to be liars, as long as they can hold on to power. This scale of perverted values goes so far beneath the illegal, it paradoxically becomes even accepted by some.

It is very hard for a nation to believe and accept that it has criminals at the helm. It was impossible for Italy, Germany, and Spain to believe the same 60 years ago. But in the last 30 years anti-tobacco has managed to pervert science to the point that laughable unreliable procedures such as epidemiological self-reporting, fraudulent manipulation of databases and methodologies (databases are ofthe proprietary, and not even accessible for public scrutiny), corruption of scientists to produce "creative" associations between tobacco and disease have gradually become the foundations for public policy - and for a mockery of science.

No one questions the "associations" between tobacco and disease because they are the medical fraud at the basis of the political fraud. The inescapable reality is that those who do not question antismoking pseudo-science are either ignorant, gullible imbeciles, or - much more commonly - simply corrupt.

Why then should we be disgusted by The Insider? It is what anti-tobacco is. It is what certain nations have become - and not just as far as smoking is concerned.

"Lawyers in North Carolina leapt to the defense yesterday of U.S. District Judge William Osteen, who was targeted by an anti-smoking group in California that used tax dollars to compile an ''enemies list'' that included the judge."

" Newspapers in California reported this week that the Americans for Nonsmokers Rights Foundation, a nonprofit group, has received more than $1.2 million since 1995 in proceeds from a state tax of 25 cents a pack on cigarettes. The group is reported to have used the money to compile an ''enemies list'' that aimed to expose front groups that the tobacco industry uses to fight tobacco-control programs. "

"The list included Osteen, a judge since 1991 for the Middle District of North Carolina who issued a ruling last year that overturned a federal report on second-hand tobacco smoke. "

" The money comes through Proposition 99, which was enacted by California voters in 1988 to pay for advertising campaigns to help persuade children and others not to smoke. "

VERY WELCOME NEWS Added December 8, 1999 - WHEN SCIENTISTS GO BAD - A new species of detective is emerging to pursue and expose cheats who cut corners in their research or commit outright fraud.

This is really welcome news for smokers. If this group wants to keep busy, we can address them to the anti-smoking cartel "studies" on tobacco-related disease, ETS, and all the other fraudulent permutations of junk science that are the backbone of the "evidence" against tobacco and its users.

This group would have to work overtime and then some! May we recommend that prisons of adequate crowd capacity are built first?

ANTI-SMOKING ENEMIES LIST added December 8, 1999 - "Taxpayers are actually financing an abuse of government power."   Such a hit list smacks of "Gestapo tactics".

By accusing the Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights of adopting Nazi tactics, the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association has performed a valuable public service for California residents.  The nationally known group, as well as other organizations, are appalled that the ANR, a million dollar plus recipient of the Proposition 99 tobacco tax, is using the public's money to compile an enemies list to silence its critics.  Individuals who oppose local smoking bans, expose anti-tobacco junk science or point out the wanton waste inherent in anti-tobacco education are likely to appear on the ANR's hit list which also includes at least one federal judge.

Proposition 99, passed in 1988, transfers money from California consumers into the coffers of a multitude of special interest organizations to "educate" the population on the so-called dangers of smoking.  To date, this transfer scheme as netted the anti-tobacco cartel and its minions over $5-billion dollars.  To safeguard its share of the loot, the ANR intimidates, bullies and threatens all who dare question any aspect of California's wasteful and abusive anti-tobacco programs.

Earlier this year the ANR caused a flap by refusing to remove from its Internet site a scurrilous smear of two individuals who dared question the computation of smoking morbidity rates.  Confirming the suspicions of those who question its ethics, the ANR claimed that its political credibility trumped the facts.  Since the ANR holds tax-exempt status and receives taxpayer funding, the brazen admission of a political agenda should activate red flags at the Internal Revenue Service.

The Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights was founded by Stanton Glantz, the mechanical engineer turned Professor of Medicine, and faithfully mimics that master of statistical manipulation.  His control of the group is evidenced by Director Julia Carol mindlessly echoing his lame "mosquito abatement" analogy when caught in an impropriety.  Glantz himself was removed from the Proposition 99 slush fund several years ago for compiling his own enemies list of California politicians who had the guts and integrity to protest the misuse of taxpayer funding.  Lately he has been smearing the Governor of Florida for curtailing the abuses of that state's anti-tobacco "education" program.

A thorough audit of the entire Proposition 99 program is long overdue.  With almost no state oversight the program is riddled with cronyism, misuse of taxpayer funds and outright corruption.   Presented with the evidence, Californians are very unlikely to continue their support for a program that has completely deteriorated from what they voted for 11 years ago.

WHEN THEFT IS EASY (AND STATE SANCTIONED), THIEVES COME OUT OF THE WOODS - (Added December 6, 1999) - TOBACCO'S BIG LOSS SETS A BAD PRECEDENT - ' The public cheered when government took on Big Tobacco and won a year ago this week. But it's time for the cheering to stop, because that victory has made some in government greedy to form another wolf pack and seek more red meat.

Milwaukee a case in point. Indeed, Milwaukee's city attorney in October described a possible lawsuit against lead-paint manufacturers as "problematic." Among the difficulties were proving which manufacturer's paint caused which victim's harm, and proving that victims were harmed by paint rather than by some other source of lead encountered in everyday life.

Still, Milwaukee's city council persisted. It decided to follow the approach used against tobacco companies by seeking out a private law firm to represent it on a contingency-fee basis. Thus, the lawsuit will cost Milwaukee virtually nothing and could provide many millions of dollars if it succeeds.

What's in it for the private law firm, which may not be paid if the suit fails? '

This is yet another interesting article we recommend for reading. One important thing, however, must be highlighted.

The "public" did not cheer when looters and liars won on the tobacco industry last year. Those who cheered were the uninformed, the hysterical, the hateful, and all those who got instigated by those corrupt media that sold themselves ethically and intellectually to outright frauds and put up an anti-tobacco show. Those media, in other words, that have proven to be so socially irresponsible as to promote hysteria instead of attempting to tone it down. Whether their name is CBS, BBC, or CNN for example, those media have been - and are - accessories to the implementation of scientific/statistical frauds, as it is clear that their zeal about anti-tobacco greatly exceeds their duty to report. In these times of "creative lawsuits" perhaps some intelligent lawyer could find a way to give the anti-tobacco cartel and its media minions an overdose of their own poisonous medicine.

UNPROVEN THEORY, ENOUGH SAID - (added December 5) - A recent story from The San Francisco Chronicle regarding yet another junk study created by the anti-tobacco cartel is noteworthy in that the reporter stepped ever so slightly out of the anti-smoking media rut and called a spade a spade by rightly labeling the basic contention of the study an "unproven theory". The story is also noteworthy for reporting the actual motive anti-tobacco researchers have for cranking out their endless supply of endlessly debunked studies: It's the money, stupid. Noting that many studies don't support the "unproven theory", a key researcher states that more studies are needed.

The unproven theory, discussed in the story, is that women are more vulnerable to "cancer-causing substances in tobacco smoke". The theory is unproven and, despite the billions of dollars flushed down the anti-tobacco toilet, likely to remain unproven since there are no substances in tobacco smoke that have ever been proved to cause cancer. The search for this Holy Grail has enriched thousands of anti-tobacco stooges and goons for over three decades and will continue until the thugs are prosecuted for fraud.

The researchers from the University of California - San Francisco, home to Stanton Glantz, the granddaddy of statistical manipulation, attempt to cover all bases by dragging in the discredited notion that secondhand smoke also is harder on women than men. As there is no evidence that tobacco smoke contains "cancer-causing substances", it is a double absurdity to lie to the public that secondhand smoke causes cancer.

Splendid article by the national post says it all: criminals like (and hire) other criminals. What else to expect from an anti-tobacco government? - Added December 3, 1999 - BEHIND THE SCENES OF THE INSIDER - Many have spoken against anti-tobacco gangster Jeffrey Wigand, recently hired by other anti-tobacco gangster, no less than Alan Rock, Health Minister of Canada. Do you think we are ranting? Not at all. Look at the facts.

Wingand is a true scum, apparently complete with criminal record, including physical abuse. THE GREAT DISTORTION (Added December 2, 1999) - THE SMOKING EPIDEMIC: DEATH AND SICKNESS AMONG AUSTRALIAN SMOKERS - This paper actually belongs to The Evidence - Tobacco-Attributed Deaths, and it has been posted in that section of our site as well. The paper, however, covers more than the statistical frauds about the so-called "tobacco-related" deaths.

This authoritative paper concerns also the Great Anti-Smoking Scientific Fraud in general. Year after year, fraud after fraud, the anti-tobacco cartel has managed to construct such a complex and intertwined building of misinformation that ranges from "creative interpretation" to outright fraud, it is now virtually impossible to demolish it without huge analysis that the masses have neither the time nor the qualifications to understand.

This is the colossal problem facing those who are dedicated to the exposure of the anti-tobacco frauds. How is it possible to demonstrate to the layperson decades of systematic scientific deceit and sloppy, biased work? Politicians and lay people are intimidated by the massive amount of information created by the anti-tobacco cartel and most of them accept it on the basis of "faith," and as confirmation of the popular and undefined "smoking is no good for you" folklore.

Nevertheless, starting with the 1964 Surgeon General Report, we have nothing but speculations (the wildest the better) that have been insufficiently challenged and, at first, have been ignored by mass-media. That is turn has given the cartel plenty of time to consolidate those lies, and let them become the "proof" upon which more and more lies and speculations were (and are continuously) built.

It may well be that smoking is responsible for some disease. But when faced with such massive amounts of deception by the very establishment that cannot actually prove just ONE of the claims in any orthodox scientific way except with the use of speculative epidemiology, it is difficult to detect the shreds of truth that may lay in the enmeshed fabric of lies.
