March 28 -About a month ago we issued a challenge to Mr.PaulSchneidereit of the Halifax Herald, anantismoker disinformer and supporter of smoking bans, who was disseminatingthe usual lies about passive smoke. Below is documentation of the articleand the challenge issued by Gian Turci, C.E.O. of FORCES International. We publish here the e-mail exchanges in chronological sequence. Ofcourse, and as expected, Schneidereit did not pick up the challenge, for he would have had to prove his misinformation to the public. Rather,he did what antitobacco operatives do best: cover their lies withslander, and promptly accused FORCES to – guess what" -- be paid offby the tobacco industry!

But whenasked by Gian Turci to back up his slander or face lawyers (in themeantime Schneidereit wrote privately to another party stating once againthat FORCES is “well known as a front for industry views. It's funded, through second parties, by industry") he retracted that too, and denied what he ever wrote that -- all in the very same day! What elsedo we have to say" This is antitobacco for you – lies over lies, and when exposed, more lies. Talk about pathological behaviour! And make no mistake: that is not different atthe highest levels of “public health”. Lies spoken by important figureswho enjoy the trust of a naïve and ignorant public do not become truer;they just become bigger, and even more revolting.

DearPaul,

Thank you for you reply. As I have already specified in myprevious letter, we are not supported in any way, shape or form by thetobacco industry, but we are in the business of debunking disinformerssuch as yourself. Diverting the issue of antitobaccobeing financed  by the pharmaceutical industry with slander willneither help, nor change the issue.

If you think that you can get away with silencing those who object to yourcheap false campaign through slander, think again. The times forpharmaceutically-funded lies begin to end, as the credibility/integrity ofhealth crusaders is seriously in question. I also demand that you retractyour statement -- or procure evidence to the public, aswe procure thedocumentation when we state that antitobacco organisations are paid off byBig Pharma. You are endangering the reputation of your newspaper bypromoting this kind of information. I stand by for evidence of yourstatement.

Dear Gian,

So the industry doesn't support your web site" They are opposed, then"Although I suspect there is financial assistance, likely indirectly, I did not state that as such in my email. BigTobacco has certainly funded a lot of pro-smoking efforts. That is a fact.Whether yours has ever been funded, I do not know.

I will not be drawn into a silly debate about the proven illhealth effects of second-hand smoke. The EPA court decision your sitecites has been overturned. The original case was brought down by a formertobacco lobbyist. [*] The medicaland scientific evidence is overwhelming. Whydo you persist"

Paul

[*] [Judge Osteen, who slammed the tobacco industry in 1997concerning the FDA decision on nicotine contents of cigarettes. Moreover,Osteen's decision has not been overturned on its scientific merits, asclearly stated by the Superior Court, but only on a technicality]

4) MR.ARCHIE ANDERSON WRITES THE FOLLOWING TO SCHNEIDEREIT

Paul:

I hopeyou take Gian and Forces up on the invitation to debate the charges madeby you against smokers, You know what will happen if you do not debate, your credibility as a reporter your publisher and the herald might as wellstart printing only a comic section........... Archie Anderson

5) THIS IS THE ANSWER OF Mr. SCHNEIDEREIT to Mr. ANDERSON (Remember: thisis in chronological sequence. This is the very same day Mr. Schneidereit stated to Gian Turcithat he did not know if FORCES was funded by the industry, denyingwhat he stated to him in the preceding e-mail.)

Archie,

Forces is well known as afront for industry views. It's funded, through second parties, byindustry.

6) Mr.ANDERSON SENDS COPY OF THE COMMUNICATION TO Mr. TURCI, WHO WRITES THEFOLLOWING TO Mr. SCHNEIDEREIT:

Gian,

I seethat I am not involved in a series of what I believed were privatecommunications.

I have no knowledge of names of any second parties nor any evidence offunding. It is, however, my opinion that your group is likely in some wayfunded by industry.

I am, Ibelieve, entitled to hold an opinion.

Paul

Therehave been no further communications with Mr. Schneidereit after this lastone. We have waited over a month to be sure that this was truly the end ofour communication.

Whatprivate communications"The challenge was official; too bad that Mr. Schneidereit obviouslydid not realise that Mr. Anderson is the head of FORCES Minnesota,so he felt free to slander us behind our back!

It doesnot take a rocket scientist to figure that this is what Schneidereitspreads around – along with hundreds of antismoking cons.

So, thetruth surfaces only when forced out from the tobacco goons.A small but important lesson for Big Tobacco from tiny FORCES. If, insteadof wasting billions in advertising while hiding and bending over, BigTobacco would use its strength to take antitobacco liars and cons tocourt, we would see a dramatic reversal of the situation and, sureenough, very many would admit the frauds and the slander or faceprison.

Eitherway, it would be fine for us, as it would be the beginning of awell-deserved end.
