ATTACKING INDUSTRIES FROM TOBACCO TO MILK

In the wake of the collapse of the federal anti-tobacco bill, some 40 states are still pressing lawsuits against tobacco makers. Moreover, some politicians and lawyers are looking around for other wealthy industries to demonize and sue.

Alcoholic beverage makers are the target of a $1 billion suit in Florida brought by a group calling itself Victory Over Addiction International.

Trial lawyers in Maryland are going after chemical manufacturers for possible harm done to children who ate lead-based paint.

The mayors of Chicago, Detroit, Miami and Philadelphia are considering using state Medicaid lawsuits against tobacco as models for possible lawsuits against gun makers.

Activists are gearing up to challenge producers of such diverse "threats" as fatty foods, caffeine, meat and even milk products.

In the last category, a Seattle man has sued dairy producers and a retailer on the claim that milk caused him to have a stroke.
