Australia
State's draconian ban on smoking

ROGER MAYNARD
The anti-tobacco lobby celebrated a major victory yesterday after the state of Western Australia banned smoking in all restaurants and most pubs.

In the most draconian anti-smoking crackdown in Australia, it will be impossible to puff away in the majority of eating, drinking and entertainment areas.

The only exceptions will be prisons, psychiatric institutions and country pubs where food is not served.

For some, the new restrictions did not go far enough. Labour Relations Minister Graham Kierath also wanted a ban on smoking in all workplaces and Dr Keith Woollard of the Australian Medical Association said the restrictions were a step in the right direction, but he was also disappointed the Government had backed away from the workplace ban on smoking.

Many hospitality businesses, however, were worried about the effect it would have on their trade. Bradley Woods, state executive director of the Australian Hotels Association, said: "I think there will be some challenges to maintain the same level of business in some areas once these restrictions hit home."
