WALTHAM, Mass., June 10 /PRNewswire/ -- In 1997, some 156 million people in the world's major pharmaceutical markets (United States, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, and Japan) were habitual cigarette smokers and therefore at risk for serious cardiovascular and respiratory ill effects. Each year, in fact, an estimated 3 million people die as a result of complications of cigarette smoking. However, smoking cessation is on the rise, driven by the recent surge in public awareness of the dangers of smoking, legislation banning smoking in many public areas, and the development of pharmacotherapies for treatment of nicotine addiction.
Smoking Cessation, a new report from Decision Resources, Inc., provides a complete analysis of epidemiology, medical practice, unmet needs, and current and emerging treatments for nicotine addiction. The array of marketing arrangements and smoking cessation products sold in each of the seven markets is summarized along with 1997 pricing and prescription and over-the-counter status.
The current smoking cessation market, valued at $450 million, is dominated by nicotine replacement in multiple delivery forms: transdermal patch, gum, nasal spray, and -- the newest formulation -- inhaler. But clinicians express a need for new drugs that are more effective than simple nicotine replacement. New therapies of particular promise include Glaxo Wellcome's recently approved Zyban and Elan/Sano's late-stage nicotine/mecamylamine patch.
Future pharmacological treatment for smoking cessation will be characterized by increased use of combination therapies, the growing popularity of Zyban, long-term use of nicotine replacement drugs, and the introduction of novel agents. The promising new products highlighted include the nicotine/mecamylamine patch, second-generation nicotine patches, a nicotine vaccine, and the anticipated use of nicotinic receptor agonists for the indication of smoking cessation. The study, which is based on in-depth interviews with thought-leading specialists, also forecasts sales of smoking cessation therapies, detailing which products will succeed -- and help propel the market to nearly $1.5 billion by 2007.
Smoking Cessation is part of Mosaic, a series of studies on timely topics, focusing on medical indications that are distinguished by major unmet need or significant changes in medical practice.
