SMOKERS WOULD LIKE TO REPORT A THEFT
The $206 Billion settlement the tobacco companies made with the states is now history and the war begins over who gets the windfall monies and how many millions or billions the attorneys make. Who is crying over the estimated $60 million a day the new price increase brought by the tobacco companies is costing smokers? What branch of government can we look to for help when the rule of law protecting American citizens applies to everyone but us? Most state officials are very concerned that no attorneys fees come out of actual settlement money, so taxpayers are not taken from. Of course smokers, who are paying the bill, were not considered.
Most politicians will have to have the smiles surgically removed from their faces because there is so much money to make them look good when they spend it. Everyday will be Christmas for them for a while. So much money to show there compassion, so much money to spend on pet projects, so much money to create or expand state bureaucracies. Everyone wins, if you don't count smokers.
Next time you see a smoker (outside of a building in the freezing weather no doubt) thank them for paying some of your bills. Even though they are, for the most part, some of the poorest people on earth.
