CONTEMPT FOR PROHIBITION

Re: Raimundo Delgado's letter

February 4th, 2000

Dear Editor,

Is it ever possible that puritans like Delgado get attention by editors while those holding opposing points of view are so often withheld?

Here we have all the classic ingredients of hysteria: contempt, puritan attitude, the omnipresent CHILDREN... calls for institutionalised prohibition, colorful and scary terminology.

The dangers on secondhand smoke are not proven in the least. The dangers of primary smoke, notwithstanding 50 years of biased research, have not been proven with any sort of scientific rigor. Smoking has NOT been proven to be "a cancer in our midst," except by those who exist to control the choices of others. And even in the UNPROVEN case that smoking is such a scourge, Delgado and his like do not own somebody else's life - as much as they would like to.

This socially divisive, irresponsible garbage about ETS is just an excuse to get money from smokers and give a moral justification for sociopathics like Delgado to spew out contempt and hate for others without looking like the reprehensible persons they really are.

Shame on him - and congratulations to the Portuguese restaurant for violating an unfair law, as well as to the man smoking the cigarette in the market Delgado has mentioned. I wish I knew where those places are... I would take a special trip to shake the hand of those people!
