QUOTE FROM ARTICLE: A handwritten note by a top RJR scientist says: "Destroyed reports and letters for legal reasons." The company's own attorneys, doing a legal review in 1985, discovered the decade-old note, which discussed early test results of damage from Camel cigarette chemicals.
COMMENTS: What "test results?" What "legal reasons"? We have a right to know the details, which the media are deliberately witholding from us to paint a false picture.
QUOTE FROM ARTICLE: Scientist John Reynolds found a way to remove carbon monoxide, a key contributor to heart disease, from cigarette smoke in the 1970s, but lawyers suppressed his discovery. Publishing Reynolds' discovery "would have constituted an admission on the part of the company that carbon monoxide was in smoke," said one lawyer, and Reynolds said his bosses felt that the removal was too expensive, the document says.
COMMENTS: This accusation is a lie of mind-boggling proportions. It is an OUTRIGHT LIE that carbon monoxide is "a key contributor to heart disease!" Not even the anti-smoking health establishment believes in this. If they did, it would be routinely included among their "conventional risk factors." It is another outright lie that no one knew that carbon monoxide was in cigarette smoke, until this piece of research. In fact, it has been known practically forever that carbon monoxide is a product of combustion, and thus could be confidently expected to be in cigarette smoke, even without any research. Only an insanely ignorant anti-smoker type could swallow this garbage, or produce it in the first place.
QUOTE FROM ARTICLE: When RJR's top scientist in the 1950s was attempting to isolate a tobacco carcinogen, then-President Edward Darr responded, "Do we really need to be doing that kind of work?"
COMMENTS: What carcinogen? Is this another example of reinventing the wheel, like the supposed carbon monoxide revelation?
QUOTE FROM ARTICLE: Tobacco companies also attempted to sway federal research. Philip Morris executive Helmut Wakeham urged lobbying an influential NCI scientist in 1971, when a study "of considerable concern to the tobacco industry" was fighting for funding. "If we make a strong presentation, he may downgrade the priority of this proposed test," some of the first research on how the addictive chemical acts when inhaled, Wakeham wrote.
COMMENTS: The tobacco companies had every right to make their input, and the attorney general is committing an outrage by pretending that they did not.
QUOTE FROM ARTICLE: Lawyers routinely edited scientific reports "to eliminate unfortunate word choices," insisting that scientists who uncovered carcinogens always refer to them as "alleged."
COMMENTS: In the absence of certainty, this is justified. And, as for "word choices," this doesn't begin to compare in enormity with the anti-smokers' act of fraud in changing the definition of addiction, and concealing their act from the public, in order to smear and defame smokers as "addicts." This is a real crime!
QUOTE FROM ARTICLE: As early as the 1950s, the "greatest fear" of the company's top lawyer "was that RJR would do something that would enable the FDA" to regulate tobacco.
COMMENTS: So what? Has mere "fear" now been legislated into a crime by anti- smoker whim?
REMEMBER, THESE LIES ARE ALL DIRECTLY RELEVANT TO HEALTH.
QUOTE FROM ARTICLE: "This massive fraud and conspiracy left an unprecedented toll of death and disease in America," said Minnesota Attorney General Hubert Humphrey III, whose ongoing anti-tobacco lawsuit helped lead to Wednesday's release of the papers.
COMMENTS: This is deluded irresponsible, not a rational human being, for the only fraud and conspiracy is the anti-smokers' own.
