February 2000 From a British Columbian Pub Owner |
"WHEN THEY CAME FOR THE SMOKERS"With acknowledgments to MARTIN NIEMULLER, a German Protestant Minister and a leader of the Church's opposition to Hitler. He was interned by the Nazis. "In Germany they came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the Trade Unionists and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to speak up." » In British Columbia they came first for the smokers in public places, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a smoker. » Then they came for the smokers in their own homes, and I still didn't speak up because I wasn't a smoker. » Then they came for the Pub owners, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Pub owner. » Then they came for the drinkers, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a drinker. » Then they came for the Liberals and Conservatives, and I didn't speak up because I was Socialist. » Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Trade Unionist. » Then they came for me - and there was no one left to defend my rights in this no longer democratic Province. SPEAK UP FOR YOUR DEMOCRATIC RIGHTS
