Coalition Asks Leonard, Young & McClean for Book Review

Victoria, April 22, 1999.....The Victoria Freedom of Choice Coalition today delivered a "hot off the press" book to CRD directors Frank Leonard and Geoff Young entitled "Passive Smoke: The EPA's Betrayal of Science and Policy."

The new book, just published by the Fraser Institute and written by Gio Gori and John Luik, is an exhaustive study of how the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) determinations on 2nd hand smoke were driven by "Junk science" and manipulated data.

The CRD has based its so-called Clean Air Bylaw on the EPA report.

Chairman of the 1,500 member Coalition, Brian Mayzes said, "We're asking these three key CRD directors (Geoff Young CRD Chair/Victoria City Councillor, Frank Leonard CRD Director/Mayor Sannich & David McClean CRD Director/Victoria City Councillor) to take a look at this book, and then take a long hard look at their entrenched positions. Clearly, they have been misled by their bureaucrats."

He added "it takes courage to admit a mistake, in this case, it wasn't the CRD directors' fault - they can only decide on the information provided to them. Now the facts are clearly detailed in this book, and it's time for this economically crippling bylaw to be rescinded."

The 'Victoria Freedom of Choice Coalition' is a group of British Columbia businesses, associations and private individuals concerned with ever increasing government intervention and social engineering. Most particularly the recent implementation and attempted enforcement of the Capital Regional District's so-called Clean Air Bylaw.
