permission of the Publisher of Canadian Access to Firearms "I was surprised to read how the Russian revolution was won with only a minuscule number of committed communist activists. A smart fellow named Vladimir Ilich Ulyanov, better known as Lenin, remarked that nothing could have been achieved without what he called the "useful idiots". He would be pleased to see they are still with us! We see them all around us: the guy who will report his neighbor for having one more cat than the legal limit; the Quebec language police with his ruler. You have seen their bumper sticker "they'll have to pry my guns from my dead frozen finger", or "split wood, not atoms" or whatever! The store owner, (in Whitehorse, Yukon...) who started enforcing gun registration years before even the Government thought about it; the contented fat body knows that..."; the loud bar fly week-end anarchist who lives off the proceeds of his paper-pushing-government-employee oversize better half; the guys who wears two condoms and want prostitutes put to jail; the cop who'll ticket you for making a running stop at 3 o'clock in the morning on a deserted intersection. Where they really shine, however, is when it comes to regulating; they never have enough. Freedom to them is a scary, suspect thought and they'd rather wallow in the warm embrace of a medium security society. In a free society, things happen and it can be very disquieting! They are the "safety Nazi", the "seat belt fanatics", the anonymous snitches. Pitilessly, they will demand that their tot wear a helmet on his tricycle! They would ban beer if they dared or, at the very least, fat foods. They place boxing four steps under child molesting in their all-encompassing order of things and believe Tai Chi is a violent sport. They rejoice at the sight of a smoker freezing his or her ass in February. They don't inhale! Safety is their religion, their mantra, their creed, their doctrine, their "raison de n'être rien". For even the mere illusion of it they'll throw in their dignity, their pride, their freedom and everyone else's, indeed! No safety net is too expensive, no legislation too intrusive, no regulation too cumbersome, no scheme they will not finance with other peoples' money, no intellectual contortion is too painful! They are the Germans who "did not know" what was done to the Jews - the leftwing academics who 'explained' Pol Pot, the "if it saves one life" morons, and, indeed, the CANADIANS WHO KEEP ON VOTING WITH THEIR FEAR. They are Lenin's "useful idiots"
