Label ban a smokescreen for government agenda
18 August 2001

"Labelling cigarettes as light and mild offers smokers a false sense of security." (The Hon. A. Rock)
" The false security argument has lots of problems. It may not be false security except for those who dream that nobody who understood the risks would smoke, drink, flirt and otherwise have fun in life. Security is, like everything else in human action, a subjective concept."
Pierre Lemieux

The social engineers at Health Canada will not be happy until the citizens of this Country are completely robotized - and they hold the controls. They will determine what 'risks' you may take and what pleasures currently enjoyed will remain permissible. Only silly people would think that they'd be able to determine that for themselves.

Health Canada bureaucrats are in the process of declaring ownership of your body. When Canada's 'Food Rules' become LAW, perhaps people will start to realize who's really living their lives. When the 'activity officials' inspect your pedometer on a weekly/monthly basis to see if you're getting enough exercise, maybe then this Country will wake up.

Far fetched? Ten years ago, if someone told you that one day it would be illegal to smoke in a bar - what would you have said?

"A secure and sanitary utopia" - is this what Canadians really want?

Flyer urges city to rat on smokers - Ottawa
17 August 2001

Anti-smoking fanatics object to being called "Nazi"? Then why are they employing the same tactics used by Hitler's Nazi regime? Encouraging people to "rat" on their neighbours can hardly be called a way of fostering peaceful social interaction and 'brotherly love'. Creating an atmosphere of animosity and distrust between fellow citizens is not beneficial to the public good - except in the opinion of zealots.

Councillor Jan Harder said the "smoking-police hotline" would turn residents into "part-time police" and encourage them "to rat on their neighbours."
"This is not part of the policy I voted for," he said.

Councillor Rainer Bloess agreed. "We're going a little crazy here. We're spending money ramming things down people's throats."
"He said advertising a snitch line is "overkill" and he called the mailout "a waste of money."

The Ottawa 'health' department is spending $35,000 for a snitch-line for those obsessed with the issue to turn in ' criminal' smokers. The article doesn't say, but no doubt callers will be able to do this anonymously (for their own protection?) as snitch-lines in other places have provided.

"Taxpayers' dollars were used to mail postcard-sized flyers this week with detachable cards to 280,000 households. The Smoke-Free By-Laws card urges residents to "report smoking in an indoor public place or workplace" by calling a special hotline." ........."The flyer, with the city of Ottawa logo in the left corner and Web site address in the bottom right, urges residents to, "Enjoy A Smoke-Free Experience!"

Being able to enjoy a 'Fanatic, Zealot-free Experience!' is more along the line of what this area of the Country needs.

Ottawa 'health' department - wonder if they have a Mental Health section?

Rising authoritarianism
16 August 2001

This article is insightful, and the comments regarding the Hon. A Rock's latest experiment with cigarette labels are right on the mark.

"... his "plan" is most likely just another chicken-scratch way to move his country closer to a total tobacco ban. And why? Because he and a few of his elitist ruling class buds don't like tobacco. Worse, they couldn't care less that Canadian smokers – all of whom are taxpayers and help pay Rock's salary – may disagree with them."

Smokers are the one stakeholder on this issue that have not been consulted. As their lifestyle is on the chopping block, slated for elimination, no one feels it necessary to seriously ask them anything. Apparently, the only thing smokers are good for is behaviour control experiment by whatever devious means available - and paying TAXES.

"...I made the decision to quit smoking – just like I made the decision to start smoking. In both instances, it was up to me to decide what to do. And in a free society, isn't that the way it's supposed to be?"

The last sentence says it very well. It IS supposed to be like that in a "free" society. Canada can no longer really claim that distinction.

Smokers won't be the only group singled out for punishment much longer. In pursuit of a 'safe and sanitary' utopia, and preserve socialized medicine, everyone will eventually come under the microscope for lifestyle 'improvement'.

Health Canada's War Against Smokers
15 August 2001

By relinquishing control to social engineers and embracing their ideas of methods to 'reduce the use of tobacco', this Government has demonstrated unequivocally that it's lost touch with the people. They went overboard sometime ago, and are now at the overkill stage. 'Obsessive-compulsive' is a term they might want to look up.

"Social historians are going to have a field day with this phenomenon 100 (years) from now. It's just taken on a highly peculiar character of its own that has no parallel in our policies governing alcohol or obesity or gun control or pesticide use or anything else whatsoever."

While agreeing with the essence of this article, there are a few things that need addressing:

"If I had a dollar of my taxes back for every dollar the federal government spends on dreaming up new ways to tie Big Tobacco's shoelaces together under the dinner table, I'd spend my savings on a detox clinic for people who smoke."

Pardon me? Is mandatory 'treatment' next on the Program List? With the way the smokefree agenda has been handled, it wouldn't be surprising to see the proviso 'no treatment without consent' dispensed with. If people want to quit, 'help' for those who need it is already available. For those who choose not to, it's nobody else's business.

"Smoking is an addiction, as powerful and insidious as heroin....They need help getting off the drug.....Smokers need their own Betty Ford Centers."

Redefining a word, in this case 'addiction', to accommodate an agenda is a profound abuse of power and sheer elitism. Perverting the Dictionary written by Researcher Martha Perske in 1996 is a must read. It chronicles the 'evolvement' of the word, and how it's been twisted to service an agenda. This was "... a politically expedient "new" set of criteria for defining addiction that cannot distinguish the effects of crack smoking from coffee drinking." To paraphrase the footnote in this Report, who would you rather have chauffeur you around - someone who's just: downed a few alcoholic drinks; had a hit of heroin or cocaine; used barbiturates - or someone who just had a cup of coffee and a cigarette? Bring on those chocoholic, caffeine addict ... detox centres!

ADDICTION ADDICTS

"The motives for medicalizing smoking may not be as pure as they are portrayed. Indeed, there are even cases where they may have little to do with improving the public health".
Kevin Wm. Wildes, a Jesuit priest, associate director of Georgetown University's Kennedy Institute of Ethics.

Rock to ban light, mild labels on cigarettes
13 August 2001

"There is nothing light or mild about the lies of Big Tobacco," Mr. Rock is to say, according to his prepared text. He predicts the industry will challenge the federal ban.
"Let them argue for their so-called right to continue to deceive and mislead Canadians rather than voluntarily doing what is right. It is my responsibility as Minister of Health to ensure Canadians have the facts."

When it comes to deceiving people, nothing holds a candle to what professional anti-smokers come up with.

We're still waiting for answers about the way the Health Canada study on environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) was presented to the public. The spin put on the 'results' is worthy of the greatest of fiction writers. Yes, it is the "responsibility" of the "Minister of Health to ensure Canadians have the facts."

happy face bootiezOh - and when it comes to more ivory tower experimenting with labels, the banishment of the words 'light' and 'mild' will be just as 'successful' as the sick graphic labels. The only thing that piece of government sanctioned terrorism has accomplished is a boost in sales for alternate packaging, and the creation of a collector's item.

Tobacco is a legal product. There is consumer demand for it. The decision to enjoy it is fully informed. There are laws, and a plethora of one-sided 'educational' campaigns, to 'protect' minors. The taxpaying citizens of this Country deserve better than the war declared upon 25% of the population who choose to be consumers of a legal product.

Loophole in Ottawa Bylaw?
09 August 2001

"Independent contractors, under civil law, are not employees. If you hire a waitress from another agency, you're no longer an employer. In which case, under the bylaw, it's not a workplace."

In an effort to preserve part of their client base, "the bar owner could pass their employees' payroll and benefits responsibilities to a third party: Smokers Choice." The argument is based on the interpretation of the word 'employee', to be decided by a court of law.

By the time we get finished redefining words to suit anti-smoking proponents, we'll have to come up with a new name for the language we speak.

What does an actual hospitality worker think about this Ottawa bylaw?

Ban threatens my income "Nazi Germany has been mentioned more than once. My livelihood is being jeopardized for my own protection, and I never asked to be saved."

Being asked if you want to be 'protected and saved' from real or mythical danger is not necessary in this land of 'freedom'. The we-know-what's-best-for-you crowd makes that determination, relegating everyone to a state of perpetual childhood. Fits right in doesn't it? After all, this whole smokefree gambit is For The Children™ .

What is the Globe and Mail hiding?
08 August 2001

Questions regarding the way Health Canada's latest study on environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) was reported have gone unanswered. The study seems to show something quite different from the way it was presented to the public and requests for an explanation have been ignored.

The integrity of this Newspaper and it's reporters is at stake. The questions asked are valid and deserve a reply. If no answers are provided, we are left with the ugly possibility that this national publication is more concerned with advancing the smokefree agenda than honestly informing the public of results of studies they paid for with their tax dollars.

The sick rise of health fascism
04 August 2001

With the dawning of the new millennium we appear to have thrown out the history books and are prepared to start recording the 21st Century as the beginning of mankind. We haven't learned a thing about the dangers of fanaticism from centuries past.

We've endured the consequences of religious and political ideologies carried to extremes - devoid of humanity, and now zealotry is being embraced in the name of 'health'.

"When attempts to stop smokers ran up against the obvious argument that people have a right to do what they want with their own bodies, the health fascists created the second-hand smoke scare. Smokers don't just harm themselves; they kill other people."

The good news is that more and more people are beginning to recognize the hoax being perpetrated 'for their own good'. Being lied to, no matter how noble the cause, is not acceptable. The trust in, and credibility of, health 'professionals' is being seriously eroded. Science itself has been undermined. (note: this is a .pdf file; you need Acrobat Reader to view it and can download a copy for free

Some 'history' books have been reviewed by today's health fascists and the technique advocated is obviously being applied,

"...the very greatness of the lie is a factor of getting it believed.... With the primitive simplicity of the masses a great lie is more effective than a small one, because they often lie in small matters, but would be too ashamed to tell a great big lie. Hence it will never occur to the broad mass to suspect so large a lie, and the mass will be quite unable to believe that anyone could possibly have the infernal impudence to pervert the truth to such an extent."
Adolf Hitler, "Mein Kampf".

The stupidity of the masses - zealots rely on it.
