TOBACCO NEWS FROM CANADA

Comments by Warren Klass President, FORCES - Canada

Dateline - Toronto, Ontario

“Terrorist…highly controversial term, that can leave journalists taking sides in a conflict….acts such as “terrorism” or people as “terrorists”. Such labels must be attributed.”  — CBC executive memo on coverage of the London bombings. Quoted in Toronto Sun, July 25,2004.

“Does this make sense? No, but its Canada under Paul Martin and the Liberals.” — Peter Worthington, Columnist Toronto Sun. July 25, 2005

July 27 - I can see the CBC’s quandary.  “Terrorist” is such a pejorative term for mass murderers.

In my last column I sarcastically suggested that Internet voters who awarded Paris Hilton the award for World’s Stupidest TV show were never exposed to many suitable candidates from CBC that make The Simple Life look like the old Twilight Zone.

Many years ago Mordecai Richler, Canada’s greatest writer, (The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravetz, Joshua Then and Now) wrote a satire about an imaginary fire at CBC headquarters in Toronto. The CBC’s first response:  Form a Committee.

If I ever write a book about my experiences at Forces Canada, I can assure you that I will have a lengthy chapter on CBC.  It wouldn’t be a hatchet job/diatribe either. In all honesty there is much to admire in the lower local levels at CBC.  At the “National” level (read Toronto), however, the CBC is a conduit for Liberal Party propaganda.

I have had at least two National interviews on CBC spiked at the last minute. As a smokers rights spokesman I don’t feel singled out at CBC.  If I were a spokesman defending George W. Bush, or America how far do you think I would have gotten at CBC?   When was the last time you saw someone on CBC defending: Mulronry, Mike Harris or Stephen Harper?

The inability to refer to London’s bombers, as “Terrorists” is hardly anomalous at CBC.  The mindset at CBC is a combination of Orwell meeting Stalin. Through a manipulation of language, it’s top down “Socialist Realism” packaged to the masses designed to keep the ruling Liberal Party in power. The CBC’s inability to refer to the London bombing as terrorism is incidental, but indicative of something larger.

Although CBC may deny it publicly their big fear is a Conservative Party majority that would privatize or starve out CBC. (CBC receives even more than the anti-smoking nuts. The Liberals annually give CBC between $800 Million to a Billion per year.)

Mulroney was the last politician who had the guts to cut the CBC subsidy. CBC helped push his unfavorable ratings up to 90%. Make no mistake, the two are connected.

Ask yourselves honestly: Are you better off after 12 years of Liberal Party rule? I can assure you the CBC and the anti-smoking PARASITES are better off.  Are you?

Dateline - West St. Paul, Manitoba

July 27 -The following letter ran July 25, 2005 in the Winnipeg Sun. The Winnipeg Sun editorial department wrote the concluding comment at the end. The letter is about the constitutional challenge to Manitoba’s smoking ban. The Judge has yet to rule.

“More harm than good

Having just spent three days attending Robert Jenkinson’s trial, challenging the current smoking legislation, I have realized that the current Non Smokers Health Protection Act is doing the opposite of what was intended. The Crown Attorney insisted that the Act is designed to eliminate environmental tobacco smoke and reduce exposure to tobacco advertising and displays where minors may be present. Even though gaming and on-premise alcohol sales revenue is down, there has been no similar reduction in tobacco tax revenue. Essentially smokers are simply smoking more at home, in their cars and on the sidewalks and in doorways. Children, particularly those with family members who smoke, are increasingly being exposed to environmental smoke and the behavior of smoking.

All the act does is punish, segregate, and denormalize smokers. The Non-Smokers Health Protection Act is just another example of our leaders asserting their authority with complete disregard for our health and environment and absolutely no consideration of the many negative consequences.

As long as tobacco is legal, designated smoking rooms ought to be legal too.”

Before I get to the news, I have to make a correction. I incorrectly listed the Internet address of the Fair Air Association of Canada. The correct link is: www.faac.ca.

FAAC has produced a video on the endless Nanny’s of the Dolton Gang. For those of you in Ontario without high-speed Internet, the text can also be accessed at their site. I urge Ontario readers to click on the endless antics of: Dolton, his economic girlie-man Smitherman, and a whole mob of unnecessary duplicates that have greatly endeared Ontario to the rest of Canada.

Dateline - Montreal, Quebec

July 25 - For those of you who might have missed it, the Canadian Press reported from Montreal:

”Canada wins for dumbest .The Canadian government beats out Iran, North Korea, and the U.S. for the dumbest government of the year at the World Stupidity Awards.”

The account carried Saturday in the Grope & Flail only gets better. Not only did we beat out such luminaries as Iran and North Korea, we also beat out the Canadian (read Ontario’s) Elite beloved and highly respected United Nations. The cornerstone of The Liberal Party of Canada’s Foreign Policy has been a Stalinist fidelity to the U.N.  This idiocy naturally has the uncritical support of the Liberal Party’s media cheerleaders: CBC, CTV, the Grope & Flail, etc.etc.

Buried in the back pages of newspapers last week, and virtually unmentioned by the broadcast media, was the story of how a Trudeau era crony and hack was kicked out of a sensitive job at the U.N. over alleged multi-billion kickbacks in the U.N.’s Saddam’s Oil for Food scandal.

The U.N. has served as the Liberal Party patronage dumping ground for other washed up Liberal hacks, which are a potential embarrassment like former Health Minister Allan Rock, who considers his war on Canadian smokers his greatest accomplishment. Rock’s proudest accomplishment was the Pornographic warning labels on cigarette packs. The World Health Organization (WHO) uses Canada as a model. Rock is now Canada’s inspired choice as Ambassador to the U.N.

The late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynahan (D-.N.Y. Seat now held by Hillary) was once ambassador to the United Nations.  Moynahan, a former professor at Harvard, in the words of George Will, "wrote more books than most Senators read” once famously called the United Nations the ”Theatre of the absurd.”

There is certain symmetry to Canada beating out the United Nations for the award annually given to the world’s Dumbest Government.

The Grope &Flail attributes Canada’s win in a worldwide Internet vote to the Gomery Inquiry. This is very trite and simplistic. The out of touch elites at the Grope & Flail do not see Gomery as a symbol of The Liberal Party as their usual corrupt kleptocracy-using the public purse as their personal piggybank. Rather, the Liberal media sees Gomery as a variation of the very lamest of lawyer’s defences:  ”Everyone in politics is corrupt and on the take… The Liberals got caught.”

Paris Hilton beat out Belinda Stronach (Canadians need no explanation) for title of world’s “Stupidest Woman.” Miss Hilton’s “That’s hot” somehow beat out the Liberal Party’s highly beloved and respected Cabinet Minister from that always beloved and respected province of Ontario. Miss Hilton also won for the world’s stupidest TV show, The Simple Life. Obviously the worldwide voters were not treated to a list of endless contenders from CBC that makes The Simple Life look like The Twilight Zone.

Other non-Canadian winners included: Ashley Simpson lip-syncing on Saturday Night Live, also beating out Belinda’s antics as: ”Dumbest Moment of the Year.” Alien vs. Predator won for stupidest movie of the year.

The Daily Show’s Lewis Black presented the awards in Montreal. In a related Daily Show story, C.P. in a Toronto datelined story, quotes Rob Cordry as saying fellow Daily Show correspondent and Canadian citizen, Samantha (Sam) Bee refuses to return to Canada to do stories. Cordry, in Toronto filming a Daily Show comedy segment quoted Miss Bee as saying:

“Now that I have my green card I’m never going back to that frigid hell hole.”   Millions upon millions of her fellow Canadians share her sentiments exactly.

Something tells me that outraged Ontario voters asking for a recount are not exactly inundating Letters to the Editors at our newspapers complaining that the government they repeatedly and ONLY vote in was ranked” WORLD’S DUMBEST.”

Dateline - Namaino, B.C.

“I cannot believe one person can make such a difference.”  Ana Cross, age 10, quoted in the Grope &Flail.

July 25 - The feel good story of the day comes from Namaino, B.C.  The Grope &Flail. reported that a 10-year-old B.C. girl won a precedent setting case beating a B.C. municipality over enforcement of a bylaw. The 10-year-old girl was sent a threatening letter for setting up a commercial enterprise-a lemonade stand-on public property.

If Miss Cross had given in to the bylaw she would have been put out of business. The townspeople rallied to her defense, offering to pay any fine, and making noise.

One 10-year-old girl has the guts millions of Canadian smokers lack.

Karen Bodirsky of the Fair Air Association of Canada (www.faaic.ca) has a brand new video available for download on its site. The topic is on the endless antics of the Dolton Gang. Must see TV for Ontario voters. Fellow dinosaurs without a high-speed Internet connection, who don’t have hours to download a video (assuming you can get your 15 year old kid to show you how to work the Windows media player) can read the text at the Fair Air site.

Several months ago, I was bored writing basically the same story with a different dateline .I thought it would be interesting before what I hoped would be a federal election, if I turned over space to my fellow Canadians for a chance to be heard.

Unless you happen to have the writing skills of Thomas Laprade (see bellow), the newspapers will not generally print letters from our side. When was the last time you were allowed to express your opinion on a talk radio show?

Voice of the People (shamelessly stolen from the Chicago Tribune title of their Letters To The Editor. I was published twice in the Chicago Tribune.) has allowed Canadians from coast to coast to have their voices heard. Due to the sensitive nature of government employment, and the antis capacity for retaliation I counsel all would-be correspondents to stay anonymous. Several however have insisted on having their names made public.

If you have a comment you would like to share with your fellow Canadians send me a brief e-mail at: wklass44@yahoo.com. Headline it ”Voice of the People.”   Please enclose city and province.

I would once again like to say thanks to all those who offered condolences on the death of my mother (She was 78 and a non-smoker who died of appendicitis) and, especially those who encouraged me to continue the column. I was ready to pack it in, and submit my resignation to Forces when so many of you encouraged me to continue. I was actively canvassing for a successor. I was bummed out from sickness, death, a failed romance (a brand new story: young chick dumps old goat) and a sense that I just wasn’t up to the task anymore of reporting the endless grind of depressing tobacco news from Canada.

July 22 - Pierre Provost sends this message to his fellow Canadians:

Fellow Canadian smokers. I am reaching out to you today because the times are grim. Not only are smokers being shunned by a majority of the population, misled by the lies of those despicable antis, but now we have to face a new threat. As you are well aware, politicians are not to be trusted. They’re only purpose in life is to dig deep into your pockets in order to grab your last penny so they can spend it on some futile committee or a fucking trip overseas. Never do they spend that money where it really matters. But one politician in the province of Quebec has gone too far.  Mr.Coullard, Quebec’s Health Minister said, and I quote:

“As soon as you are under the influence of a substance, you don’t have rights anymore.”

It’s not just the antis who said this; it’s the Health Minister of the province of Quebec. I just can’t begin to describe how mad I am right now.

We need to meet this outrage with all we can muster. Smokers across this country should unite against the evils that are the antis (those fucking puritan bastards). The time for negotiation is over, the time has come for us to fight back, with every means possible.

“Everyone wants to be Carry Grant. I want to be Carry Grant.”
Carry Grant

July 22 - Everyone wants to write like Thomas Laprade.A couple of years ago I received a phone call and met with an old guy in Winnipeg who was so moved by the writing of Thomas Laprade he saw in Forces that he wanted advice on how to write like Thomas. I told him it’s the equivalent of watching Picasso paint. If I were to watch George Will (Washington Post columnist) or Peggy Noonan (Wall Street Journal columnist and former Reagan and Bush 34 speechwriter. Authored Reagan’s “Boys of Pont Hoch”  speech, Reagan’s” Touched the Face of God” speech, Bush 34’s”Kinder and Gentler America…1,000 points of Light”) write a column it doesn’t mean I’m going to write great column.

Thomas is an extraordinarily talented writer. Nietzsche defined genius:  ”as the ability to say in 10 lines what everybody says in a book. And what everybody doesn’t say in a book.”   By this definition Thomas Laprade is a genius.

The usually anti-smoking Chicago Tribune recently published the following letter from Thomas:

The bandwagon of local smoking bans now steamrolling across the nation has nothing to do with protecting people from the supposed treat of secondhand smoke.

Indeed the bans themselves are symptoms of a far more grievous threat, a cancer that has been spiraling for decades throughout the body politic.

This cancer is the only real hazard involved-the cancer of unlimited government power.

Loudly billed as measures that affect public places such as bars and shops, places whose owners should be free to ban smoking or not and whose customers are free to patronize or not. Outdoor bans even harass smokers in places where others' health is obviously not the issue.

The decision to smoke or to avoid secondhand smoke is a question for each individual to answer based on his own values and judgment. This is the same kind of decision free people make regarding every aspect of their lives. All lifestyle decisions involve risks; some have demons ratably harmful consequences, many are controversial and invite disapproval from others, but the individual must be free to make those decisions.

Yet when it comes to smoking, the freedom of choice for a minority is being seriously limited by a majority made baselessly fearful through massive media campaigns often funded by tax dollars.

The real threat we face, no matter how strongly it is denied by the anti-smoking lobby, is the systematic and unlimited intrusion of the government into our lives.

Elected officials are in office to serve us, not vive versa.

July 18 - I Read the News Today…Oh Boy — Special Edition — No Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas.

I realize that many of you turn to Forces Canada for the latest tobacco news. From this point on, I would like to link to the latest Canadian tobacco news found in the Canadian section of the weekly United Pro Choice Smokers Newsletter. Contact Samantha (Sam) Phillipe to subscribe free.

For a variety of reasons, this represents the best hope to carry on the column without the exhausting minutia of local Canadian politics. It is my hope in the forthcoming months to concentrate on the BIG Things.

I am very confident that the Canadian editor of Samantha Phillipe’s weekly newsletter, Mrs. Linda Dugay, of Ontario, is my obvious successor at Forces Canada if she chooses to accept the responsibility. Linda has the quality the last 3 presidents of Forces Canada lack; youth and an ability to connect with younger people.

One of the major problems with smoker’s rights is that most involved  were teenagers in the 60s.  Where are the kids?  We know tons of them smoke. Why isn’t smoker’s rights topic A on every college and university?

One of the frustrations of smokers rights is we have THE EVIDENCE TO A VIRTUAL METAPHYSICAL CERTAINTY.  We know and they know it. We lack a way to resonate with today’s kids.  A Politically Correct version of Hitler Youth. (Membership was compulsory in either Hitler Youth and the League of German Girls, for those between 10-18.  All had to take personal No-Smoke pledges for Hitler. Their anti-smoking slogans included:  ”You Have A Duty To Be Healthy. Health Is Not A Private Matter. Your Body Belongs To The State.”)

I was asked in Las Vegas by a documentary filmmaker why I got involved in the Smokers Rights movement. The answer I give publicly is that of a former grad student in German history that has a real great story to tell about Hitler/Nazi anti-smoking campaigns. The problem with most journalists is they have no knowledge or understanding beyond the final headline. Whether the topic is second-hand smoke or Nazi Germany their understanding of the issue is very rudimentary, heavy on the cliché’s.

The media are not intellectuals out for the truth. If they were the anti-smoking craziness would have ended some time ago. The PARASITES would have been portrayed as what they are.  The Canadian version of the $64,000 question is: how long until the Ontario blue-collar class tosses: McGuinty, Smitherman, Martin, and the whole mob of unnecessary duplicates at Health Canada?

It is my hope that people like Linda Dugay find us a younger audience.  Sam is to be commended for introducing us to younger alternative journalists who are more open minded than mainstream journalism. It’s a good start.

Many of you from both Canada and the U.S, including heartfelt comments from Kathy, Karen, (I wish they all could be Ontario girls) and many others too numerous to mention have convinced me to try in some form to carry on the column. I’ll give it my best shot for as long as I can.

“He who steals a loaf of bread is a thief. He who steals a country is a Duke.”  Machiavelli

Thoughts from the recent Smokers Rights Conference in Las Vegas:

This was not Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. There is no question the recent gathering of the tribes in Las Vegas was not a Forces show. Although Forces and Canada (exclusively Ontario) were well represented. One Ontario attendee said to me:  ”Warren, I get the sense you don’t like Ontarians very much.”  Not exactly. I don’t like the way Ontario votes.

Samantha Phillipe put on a wonderful convention. I got to meet Luc Martial, Norman Kjono,  Maryetta Ables, (new president of Forces West Virginia), and re-connect with old friends Samantha (Sam) Phillipe and Andy Ludlow of Forces.

On my last night in Vegas I reminisced with Andy about the old days in Forces but only Sam, Andy and myself represented the old gang in Las Vagas. I would like to attend a Forces only convention so we can meet all the new people.

The conference opened with a message from the first Forces Canada president Gian Turci.  As usual it was a brilliant synopsis. This was followed by a statement from Tony Osuagwu, president of Forces Nigeria where there are some 20,000 members.

The highlight of the conference for me was a mind boggling presentation from the Canadian PARASITES WORST NIGHTMARE:  Luc Martial.  Luc was a “tobacco control specialist at Health Canada.” You think Jeffery Wigand has a story to tell, this is nothing compared to the story publicly given by Luc.

About a year ago, a Federal employee in Ottawa contacted me with a story so fantastic I chose not to share it with Forces Canada readers, because the individual for obvious reasons wanted their identity protected and I had no way of independently confirming the story until I talked to Luc.  What my source described was business as usual at Health Canada.

The attitude of Health Canada has been encapsulated as:  ”WE KNOW ITS ALL BULLSHIT BUT THE END JUSTIFIES THE MEANS.”   The alibi of EVERY Monster in History!

I heard that Health Canada had trouble recruiting writers who could write their anti-smoking bullshit. I was shocked to find that Health Canada had trouble-finding scientists who would sign their name to obvious lies and propaganda.

What was shocking was to hear Luc’s spellbinding account of how a tiny group of PARASITES led by Gar Mahood of The Non-Smokers Rights Association hijacked a country and looted a treasury for their self-indulgent motives. It was a tiny group, with a hijacked and bought off media that has turned Canada into a nightmare.

And the Ontario attendees cannot seem to understand why they are so loved by their fellow Canadians. Ontario has become Canada’s new Quebec.
