TOBACCO NEWS FROM CANADA

Comments by Warren Klass President, FORCES - Canada

Dateline - Montreal, Quebec

August 26 - Life Imitates Art. In the late 1960s Mel Brooks made a movie that later became a smash Broadway play entitled The Producers. The story involves two con men who oversell shares in what they hope will be a flop of a play. No hit could possibly pay all the investors. They desperately need a flop.

They find a guaranteed stinker of a script - a campy version of “Springtime For Hitler and Germany” They recruit the worst director, the worst actor, etc. Naturally it becomes a huge hit.

One said:” We had the worst script, the worst director, the worst actor - WHERE DID WE GO RIGHT?”

One of the most sensational episodes at the Gomery Inquiry involved tales of how the appointment process for Quebec Judgeships went beyond the usual Liberal Party patronage dumping grounds to something bought and paid for. Even by the standards of the Liberal Party appointed hacks and bagmen, certain Quebec judicial rulings and comments were beyond belief.

Thus I am as shocked as anyone that a Quebec Appeals Court overruled a Quebec Judge and ruled in favor of the Tobacco Companies - sort of. I realize that by the standards of any civilized country such a verdict would not be any big deal. But this is Canada and the Liberal Party appointed judiciary we’re talking about.

Here is the controversial judgment: tobacco companies have the right to communicate with adult smokers. The most bizarre part of the ruling gives tobacco companies the right to sponsor events using their corporate but not brand name. For example the Quebec Appeal Court finds that for example Imperial Tobacco can sponsor an event but Du Maurier cannot. This is the equivalent of Phillip Morris (Altria) being allowed to sponsor an event but Marlboro cannot.

My initial reaction to this front-page story in the Grope and Flail was three words. Two of which were “Who Cares”? and “Big Deal.”

But my Rush To Judgment was wrong. It is a big deal that a Canadian Court has finally stated that someone other than the PARASITES and their Liberal Party enablers actually have some rights in this country.

As to be expected the PARASITES led by Gar Mahoodlum and the Cancer Society’s Ritchie Cunningham were naturally at their most bombastic. Here is a sample of what Mahoodlum told the Grope and Flail:

“We believe this creates a loophole which can be exploited by the industry.

It opens the door to this industry to buy legitimacy. This flies in the face of everything the international health community is trying to do.”

But wasn’t the stated pretext for this ban, not to De-legitimatize but to prevent some mythical kid from starting to smoke because he watched the Du Maurier Tennis Tournament, if they weren’t watching a movie glorifying smoking? Never mind.

This is Canada where the only legitimate normal people are a handful of PARASITES who scoop up about $500 million a year of taxpayer dollars from the Liberal Party. The rest of us are “De-Normalized” or “De-Legitimitized” and we need PARASITES like Gar Mahoodlum to dictate social mores.

Quebec Appeals Court Judge Andre Brossard wrote:

“I know, for example, of no legislation that forbids even organized crime groups, such as biker gangs, from using their name or corporate logo.

I cannot conceive that a duly incorporated company, whose corporate name was approved by the state, whose name by itself bears no harmful connotation going against public order and good manners, could not legitimately use that corporate name.”

Life imitates art. Where did the Liberals go right in appointing this guy? Not to worry, the Liberals already announced that they would appeal this decision to the Liberal Party appointed prize packages on the Supreme Court.

Dateline - Toronto, Ontario

August 26 - Virtually every nation on earth, led by former Communist countries cannot privatize state enterprises fast enough. Every country that is, except for The People’s Democratic Republic of Soviet Kanukistan aka Canada.

As previously reported in Forces Canada, Cynthia “The Mallard” Callard the head Quackette at Physicians For A smoker Free Canada called on the Liberals to nationalize the tobacco industry. The stated pretext was to SAVE THE CHILDREN™ from the conspiracy of Big Tobacco, blah, blah, blah. The real motivation for a PARASITE is more money and government jobs.

One of the major flaws of PARASITE ideology that with no evidence they successfully peddle to the media the myth that high smoking rates are the plot of Big Tobacco rather than old-fashioned consumer demand. There is a lingering fetish among the left that markets are dirty and evil, rather than just responding to consumer demand. According to PARASITE ideology: Big Tobacco is a profiteer of death, blah, blah, blah, the hospitality industry are” enablers” rather than businessmen responding to consumer demand. And smokers are always to be “De-Normalized a term of secular pariahs first dreamed up by Hitler. In this goofy ideology, the government plays Old Testament God punishing sinners under ever more ridiculous pretexts.

Let’s take this Quackette’s proposal at face value and see if government control of the tobacco industry leads to lower smoking rates. Japan Tobacco (owner of RJR brands outside the U.S. including Winston and Camel) is owned by the Japanese Government. It is probably just a co-incidence that Japan has the highest percentage of smokers, the lowest percentage of lung cancer, and the highest life expectancy in the industrialized world. A smoker in Japan has a higher life expectancy than a non-smoking North American.

But I digress. The Financial Post, the business paper of the National Post recently ran their own critique of Miss Mallard’s proposal. Here is the best part:

“Nationalization is not a rational solution for the health problem caused by cigarettes. It may cost a lot of taxpayer’s money (as much as 15 billion) to buy out the tobacco companies. It will have no influence on tobacco consumption, and will involve economic and other losses for smokers. Indeed, the only thing that this book really promotes is the particular interest of anti-tobacco activists who will substantially benefit from nationalization. It is no co-incidence that two of the three authors are associated with Physicians for a smoke-free Canada, an Ontario based group directly financed by Health Canada for almost 70% of their budget. Canadians should not be fooled by such bad public policy, which is clearly directed against their interests.”

Dateline - Vancouver, B.C

August 26 - The usually reliably anti-smoking Vancouver Province recently ran an editorial opposing the outdoor smoking ban proposal in Vancouver.

The Province actually sounds reasonable - quite an anomaly in Vancouver.  How, the Province asks, can junkies be accommodated but not smokers. Dialectic contradiction 101.  No word on how this might impact Vancouver’s legions of pot smokers.

The Province even sides with the hospitality industry that just finished spending millions because of the last round of anti-smoking edicts, and ask what is to be accomplished?

Could it be that the Vancouver Province is tiring - as the rest of Canada did long ago - of the endless goofiness from British California?

“It has been said that truth is the first casualty of war. The deceptions of the war on smoking have done incalculable harm to the nation. The grossly overstated dangers of smoking to health have distorted the nation’s health priorities. To equate smoking with alcohol or drugs as teenage dangers is obviously absurd, and would never have happened if the health dangers of smoking had been accurately reported. The war on smoking has become a crusade of good against evil, and logic and science have been prostituted to attain its objective.”

The Blunders Of SAMMEC (1) 4000,000 Killed By Smoking!?
By Rosalind B.Marimont

Dateline - Ottawa, Ontario

August 22 - The Ottawa based group, Policy Alliance of Canada just put out a policy paper on its Internet site entitled ”Anti-Smoking Stats Scam.”  The basic theme of the article is a critique of SAMMEC.  Before the anti-Smoking PARASITES start screaming “BIG TOBACCO”, here is what the Policy Alliance had to say about SAMMEC (Smoking Attributable Mortality, Morbidity and Economic Costs):

“No regard is given to other major factors in each death such as obesity, family history, workplace environment, lifestyle and complicating health issues.”

The reason for this obvious sophistry is if the word ”associated” is substituted for the word “ cause”, the 400,000 SAMMEC number is reduced immediately by 50%- just for starters. (Health Canada divides SAMMEC by 10% to claim “40,000 Canadians die prematurely. blah, blah, blah.”) But even these numbers are wildly inflated. For example when just the heart disease numbers are run on SAMMEC, using just 6 of the most common causes of death including smoking, the number of deaths from heart attacks jumps 600%. This is 600% more than actually die from heart disease.

Forces and Forces Canada readers are aware of the SAMMEC scam.  Lumping current and former smokers juice statistics. For example, someone who smoked even a single cigarette, and dies at age of 100 will be calculated as a “premature smoking related death” under the SAMMEC model.

But as Roslyn Marimont points out when the word “associated” is replaced by “caused” the numbers immediately decrease by 50% for starters. Then when the heart disease numbers are recalibrated for risk factors that drops by another 60%. And so it goes.

Suffice to say that the point of SAMMEC is not truth but to inflate statistics to the point of absurdity where only a brain dead media and politicians would believe them.

Policy Alliance also points out that even SAMMEC with all its garbage  finds that virtually all the smoking related deaths are people over 65,with an overwhelming majority over 72.Even then only 20% of deaths can be attributed to smoking, the same percentage as the general population. Ergo-no “epidemic of smoking related deaths.  ”SAMMEC calculates smoking as anyone who EVER SMOKED A CIGARETTE. For example is someone dies 100 years old and even smoked a SINGLE CIGARETTE, then his death is calculated by SAMMEC as ”premature, smoking related.”

The anti-smoking PARASITES are nervous that someone might actually notice an oversight in SAMMEC regarding lung cancer and second-hand smoke.1.3 per cent of lung cancer deaths in non-smokers can in no way be attributed to primary or second-hand smoke. - There are an awful lot of Dana Reeve’s out there.

In a related story out of Ottawa the Liberal Party of Canada’s Blood-Libel continues. The Windsor Star reported that Heather Crowe was admitted to an Ottawa hospital. Her lung cancer, which she claims-with no evidence-was caused from second-hand smoke has spread.

The media for the most part has either ignored the latest from Heather Crowe or relegated it to the back pages.

Dateline - Toronto, Ontario

August 22 - The National Post reported on two non-smoking stories out of Toronto last week. Although not directly about smoking its indicative of the Liberal Nannyism going on now in Ontario.

We’ve all heard of Big Tobacco, Big Pharma.  Would you believe “Big Sprinklers”? There is a proposal spearheaded by Sprinkler Manufacturers and naturally supported by the Toronto Fire Department to mandate sprinklers in ALL Private residences. The cost? Astronomical.

Toronto is suffering from gun/drug related shootings in minority neighborhoods. Naturally “illegal smuggled handguns from the U.S.” are made the whipping boy. We all know the mantra: Guns, Deaths, Republicans, NRA, blah, blah, and blah.

The brilliant solution of the Mayor of Toronto, David Miller: BAN ALL Guns in Toronto-even if they are legal and registered.

Dateline - Winnipeg, Manitoba

August 22 - Thomas Laprade calls the next story a ”heartwarming minority helping minority story.”

The Winnipeg Free Press reported that the Rousseau First Nation Indians are spending millions to buy and renovate the abandoned Canada Packers sight in St. Boniface and turn it into an “Urban Reserve.”  Plans include smoker-friendly venues. The Rousseau First Nation just opened another highly successful smoker friendly complex just south of Loserpeg on Hwy. #75 South near the American border.

Dateline - Victoria, B.C.

August 22 - For any parent who wonders what is more harmful smoking or drugs should see the next story.

The Victoria Times Colonist reports that a detox clinic devoted to helping kids quit crystal math-which used to have a huge waiting list-is having trouble attracting the kids because of the smoking ban. The director told the Times Colonist:

“We’re now at 75 per cent capacity and it’s dropping each month. A lot of referral agents say kids are not even willing to consider it because of the no-smoking rule. The kids are just saying no.”

Dateline - Ottawa, Ontario

August 18 - I am grateful to have been afforded the opportunity to continue writing at Forces. I’m not trying to sound overly pedantic or preachy when I say that the essence of the two big Totalitarian philosophies that wreaked havoc and killed hundreds of millions (Communism and Nazism) is total reductionism predicated on THE BIG LIE. Marxism is predicated on the trite belief that “everything is about money.” It may be true for the PARASITE class of the left. The theme of the new “must read” book of the left is why Kansas votes Republican. This makes a mockery of Marxist logic. What could possibly motivate Kansas to consistently and overwhelmingly vote Republican? Kansas would be wealthier under the Democrats. “It’s the economy, stupid” has been a liberal mantra.

The big self-serving fantasy of the PARASITE left (the profiteers of anti-smoking) is somehow the state is supposed to be some kind of cleansing agent, in an enforced Godless, but ultimately paganistic universe, complete with” progressive”  fetishes masquerading as “HEALTH.”

The great historian Arnold Toynbee once said, that the major flaw in left-wing thinking is their belief that the “Government is God. Government is not God. It’s the water company.”

We have a textbook example of this kind of “thinking” from the Quackette at Physicians For A Smoker-Free Canada, Cynthia “The Mallard” Callard.  Once again Cynthia never bothers to think before opening her beak. In her latest public policy advocacy published in the National Post (and mercifully totally ignored by the rest of the Canadian media), Cynthia Callard called on the Canadian government to nationalize Canada’s tobacco industry. The tab for this idiocy? Only about $8 Billion. But it’s the Liberals in power, and its your tax money-so never say never.

The pretext? SAVE THE CHILDREN from the conspiracy of Big Tobacco, blah, blah, and blah. The real motivation. More money and government jobs for the burgeoning PARASITE class of “tobacco control specialists.” Vulgar Marxism 101`-follow the money.

In Canada governments already control gambling and alcohol distribution. Is there an under 18 teenager anywhere in Canada that couldn’t get a bottle of beer and a lottery ticket? Aren’t we all regularly bombarded with hysterics (more tax money) who regularly claim that teenage gambling and drinking are at “epidemic” proportions? But isn’t the very raison d’être of government control of these rackets is to keep them away from kids? Never mind.

The only thing we have an epidemic of in Canada is an epidemic of PARASITES at the public trough.

Dateline - Toronto, Ontario

August 18 - You’ve Come A Long Way, Baby! The headlines coast to coast put out by the PARASITES propaganda machine is telling Canadians that the politics of punishment is supposedly producing desired results-fewer smokers. This claim is supposedly based on some survey that claimed fewer young women are smoking. The results for males in that age group are unchanged. A chorus of halleluiah editorials of course followed this.

There were a couple of exceptions. The Grope and Flail thought so little of this they buried it on page 5.  The usually anti-smoking Winnipeg Free Press said this in a lead Saturday editorial:

“Statistics Canada released this week the results of its Canadian Tobacco Use Monitoring Survey for 2004 showing a drop in Canada-wide smoking prevalence so small a drop to 20 per cent from 21 per cent –or there may have just been a sampling error in the survey.”

Lets get this straight, after the smoking bans, taxes, pornographic warning labels, endless propaganda, BLOOD-LIBELS (Heather Crowe), and the rest of the “De-Normalizing” (a concept originally dreamed up by Hitler), not to mention the $500 million a year that goes to the PARASITE CLASS, and more hundreds of millions of anti-smoking propaganda that annually goes to the Liberal Party cheerleaders in the broadcast and print media: CTV/Grope & Flail, Global TV/National Post, CBC etc, etc. - the PARASITES big success story is “a sampling error.” I have three words for this. Two of them are ”BIG DEAL”.

Never in history have so few inflicted so much on so many with so little to show for it.

Dateline - Red Deer, Alberta

August 18 - I recently received correspondence from a group called Campaign For Truth & Common Sense who asked me to publicize our fight and their efforts. I was sent me various copies of a story in the Red Deer Advocate.

There is a grass roots movement going on now in Red Deer to have another referendum on the question of undoing the results of the last referendum banning smoking in Red Deer.

It requires 8,000 signatures to be put on the ballot. The Campaign For Truth & Common Sense so far has 4,000 signatures. The movement is being spearheaded by the Red Deer Legion with help from the hospitality industry and bingos-the usual “stooges and fronts for BIG TOBACCO.”   The epicenter of Big Tobacco’s nefarious conspiracy is in Red Deer Alberta-Stephen Harper country.

The headquarters of Big Tobacco’s conspiracy is the Red Deer Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion whose brainwashed members of the GREATEST GENERATION voted something like 520-6 to fight the smoking ban. Six? The Liberal Party probably gets more votes in Red Deer. There are probably more Maple Leafs fans in the Red Deer Legion.

Their ad in the Red Deer Advocate shows the picture of three heroes with their medals. The Caption reads:  ”Freedom Won Is Now Freedom Lost.”

Be assured the PARASITES will claim the ad was paid for by BIG Tobacco.

Dateline - Edmonton, Alberta

August 18 - Thomas Laprade does it Again! The Edmonton Sun this time published one of Thomas’ letters. What makes this interesting is the line the Edmonton Sun edited out:  ”http://www.forces.org/articles/files/sammec.htm “. Here is what the Edmonton Sun published last week:

“Les Hagen, Action on Smoking and Health executive director said “1,000 Canadians die annually from second-hand smoke.  ”Mr.Hagen gets those figures from a ‘risk’ computer called SAMMEC.  In other words; there are no bodies, no death certificates. Nothing! No one has died or gotten cancer from second-hand smoke.”

August 18 - In the 1970s there was a TV show called Fernwood 2Night (Martin Mull as Garth Gimble). One of the skits from this fake talk show was the appearance of a scientist from “the highly acclaimed Fernwood Community College” with the claim that leisure suits cause cancer. His proof? He brought along pictures of laboratory rats dressed in leisure suits-and they all got cancer. (By the way this is about the level of the entire” smoking causes lung cancer” song and dance.)

In the life imitates art department, the Calgary Herald reported that a scientist from the University of Lethbridge claimed that having a smoke helps stroke victims recover faster. He joked to the Herald that he didn’t “dress the rats in smoking jackets” but rather shot them up with nicotine.

But of course this does not mean that stroke victims should light up because smoking can cause, blah, blah, blah.

Dateline - Vancouver, B.C.

August 18 - Readers of this page are in no doubt about my feelings of CBC.  Last week I received a call from CBC Vancouver about the outdoor smoking ban, The producer had read my comments about it on Forces. I told her I would be delighted to make a comment. People have sent me articles from the Vancouver Sun.

I was told that they wanted a “local” comment. I suggested Forces Canada past president Mrs. Pat Hagen.  CBC told me that Pat refused to come out of retirement for the interview. Did I know anyone else? Yeah, but he works for the feds and they have been known to retaliate. I told the producer this is why I keep correspondence from federal employees anonymous. She seemed genuinely surprised that the Liberals could sink that low.

I told CBC to ask Pat to reconsider and ask her if she knew anyone who could comment. If not they were free to contact me. They never did.

August 10 - Peter Jennings

“Lung Cancer…a political disease requiring political solutions. The Nazi campaigns against tobacco are in some sense as fascist as yellow stars and death camps. The Nazis tried to create a ‘secure and sanitary utopia.’”

Robert Procter, The Nazi War on Cancer.

I’d like to say a few things about Peter Jennings and Heather Crowe.  ABC news anchor Peter Jennings was a Canadian, who recently died of lung cancer four months after diagnosis. And Heather Crowe after all these years is a Wrong DIAGNOSIS IN SEARCH OF A GULLIBLE VICTIM.

The obituaries from the usual suspects in the mainstream anti-smoking media all mentioned that Mr. Jennings was a smoker. Peter Jennings started smoking long before 1962, the date-filtered cigarettes were introduced. He claimed to have stopped smoking for 20 years and only started again after Sept.11.  I have read various media accounts, with some claiming that he never quit smoking.

Peter Jennings also lived a good portion of his life in London. Why is this relevant? A couple of years ago Forces International carried an account from Britain’s Independent newspaper about recently de-classified Cabinet meetings from the McMillan government circa 1955.In the mid-fifties (the Ike Age) Britain had an epidemic of lung cancer deaths. The minutes from the Cabinet meeting showed that Harold McMillan et al could blame this on:

(A) Coal fired electricity plants or
(B) Smoking

Never mind for a moment there are 38 other documented causes of lung cancer. We all know which whipping boy politicians and the media chose as a scapegoat. It was much easier for McMillan to blame smoking rather than risk possible mass-hysteria by blaming coal. At the time Britain was the world’s largest coal producer. Blaming coal-fired plants would have been economic suicide for England. It was much easier to blame smoking.

The mainstream anti-smoking media have with a few notable exceptions (Anderson Copper at CNN, NBC) has for the most part not used the death of Peter Jennings to go on and on in their usual –change the channel-moronic, propaganda diatribes. Peter Jennings had too much class to go on about anti-smoking when he was alive. He did allow the anti-smoking nuts to go on but let’s face it; this was DISNEY CORPORATE POLICY, and not Peter Jennings.

Surprisingly, the usual hyenas (New York Times, Washington Post, CBC, Grope&Flail) actually handled the death of Peter Jennings with some class, decency and honor. How out of character.

Once again Forces Canada is proud to showcase Other Voices. In   this issue there are two poignant Voices of the People from Eastern Canada. It has long been my contention that as Canadians we have more that unites us than divides us. I realize that we are separated not only by language, religion, culture, race, and gender, but by great geographic distances as well. Yet in spite of our many differences we have more that unites us than divides us as Canadians.

If you feel that you have something to share with your fellow Canadians send me a brief e-mail at wklass44@yahoo.com. Headline it” Voice of the People”. No attachments please.

August 5 - The following correspondence was received from Pierre Provost:

“The federal, provincial, and municipal government are openly and blatantly acting against many citizens of Canada by passing bills that prohibit smoking in what they call “public buildings or area.” Let me remind you what a public building is: it is a building or area, which is owned and maintained by the State. Everything else is private. Whether they are owned and maintained by one or many proprietors. Bars, restaurants, cafes, snack bars, bistros, billiard rooms, bingo halls, convenience stores, donut shops, shopping malls, etc. They all fall under the category of private business. Private businesses are open to the public in general, but they are by no means public buildings or areas.

Private business owners work long and hard to identify and attract their target customers. They do not start a business hoping that just anyone will walk through the front door. It takes years before they can establish a loyal client base. Now all this hard work, all this dedication and pride is being swept away by any crooked government who could care less about free enterprise, rights and freedom.

There is no known democratic regime that has the right to meddle in the affairs of private businesses. When they do they are called communist regimes, totalitarian regimes and dictatorships.

I’m the only one who knows he’s living in a world run by intolerant and vicious Health Nazis.”

August 5 - “Please don’t leave us."

Dear Mr.Klass:

I have been repeatedly entertained and educated by your insightful comments on the scourge of insidious fascism. I hope you will always in some way stay in the ring to further educate and inspire us.

The suppression of knowledge is the descent into insanity. For the past 30 years have seen this philosophy reek havoc in its zero tolerance policies, which always deny some aspect of due process or natural justice, and its perpetuation of lies through the church of statistics. My god, coffee was touted, as black deaths in the 70s.Eggs were a time bomb in the cardio-vascular system.

Statistics are used as the new frontal lobotomy of innocent but naïve people who actually believe the media and politicians would not lie to them.

Smokers are the new pariahs. Jewish people should know what that means and the many cultures that make up Canada, who have escaped oppression know what that means.

I am old and so are you. Where are the young people who will lead the revolution against this nonsense of mathematics? Where are my great teachers who taught me about scientific and statistical ethics?

As Homer Simpson might say, 80% of the people know that you cannot be fooled by 10% of the people 100% of the time.

I challenge Canadians. The question is not do we want to vote Liberal or Conservative. It is whether we want to vote for a new party that supports a Canada that supports individual freedoms. Canada unite, and say no to politicians that survive on conflict rather than resolution.”

Dateline - Windsor, Ontario.

August 5 - The usually reliably anti-smoking Windsor Star carried the following obituary of Sir Richard Doll. There is an inaccuracy in the Windsor Star’s obituary. The Star claims it was Sir Richard who first detected the link between smoking and lung cancer in 1965.

This is false. In the interests of accuracy, it was Dr. Hans Muller, with a 100,000 Mark personal grant from Adolph Hitler, who claimed the epidemiological link in 1939.  If you smoke 35 cigarettes a day AND work in an asbestos mine or dye factory AND don’t eat your fruit and vegetables AND don’t exercise, IF you get lung cancer there is a p>0.000001 (a one in a million chance) that smoking did not play a role. Out of this came:  ”Smoking Causes Lung Cancer.”  This is what Hitler got for his 100,000 grand.

Doll’s findings-purely statistical association, with no biological evidence- was identical to Mullers, although published 26 years later. In 1962, filtered cigarettes that cut tar and carcinogens by 90% were developed, making this link even more problematic. In other words: why hasn’t Keith Richards developed Lung Cancer? Or anyone around him. Can you imagine how much second-hand smoke they were around?

Here is the Windsor Star’s obituary:

Epidemiologist who first demonstrated the link between smoking and lung cancer.

Although he once said to work for the tobacco industry was as “immoral as keeping a brothel” he was far less dogmatic about an individual’s right to smoke.” I don’t mind in the least if someone in the room lights up a cigarette,” he told the Journal of Addiction in 1990, ”Its their decision and their life, not mine.”

He quoted only from his figures and was no absolutist. When questioned recently on second-hand smoke, he exasperated the anti-smoking lobby by replying:” The effects of other people’s smoking in my presence is so small it doesn’t worry me.”

He also wont to point out that the idea that smokers cost the taxpayers millions in hospital fees is in fact a myth…

Sir Richard Doll, CH, epidemiologist and scholar, was born October 28, 1912.He died on July 24, 2005,aged 92.”

August 5 - Late last month I quoted a memo from CBC where Peter Mansbridge was not to refer to the London bombers as terrorists. Never mind that the very same CBC has never been the least reticent about de-normalizing smokers.

A letter on the topic of the CBC refusing to label the London mass-murders as “Terrorists” was published last week in the Winnipeg Sun. As the correspondent makes clear this is hardly anomalous at CBC.  Some excerpts:

 “ Memo takes the cake

If we needed any further evidence that the CBC tax drain should be dismantled and sold to the highest bidders, the corporate memo to its staff cautioning them not to use the word terrorist when referring to, well, terrorists just about does it.

The CBC wastes one billion tax dollars a year…In return we get what is increasingly perceived worldwide as left-wing rhetoric. The O’Reilly Factor correctly concludes that CBC just outright lies on many occasions and therefore cannot be relied upon as an objective source of news. It produces B-circuit television programming…

After Sept.11, this useless organization quickly pounced on a stunned America and blamed it for attacks in a series of organized town – hall meetings. They were quite certain that the U.S. would simply curl up in a collective fetal position and wave the white flag of surrender. Alas, America is not France and its resolve and subsequent throttling of the Afghan and Iraq terror regimes were reported on with great dismay and wringing of hands by the CBC.

Now, they can’t even call a spade a spade, trying to pretend that those Muslim fanatics blowing people up are anything but terrorists.”

“But where are the clowns?
Quick! Send In The Clowns!
Don’t bother they’re here.”

August 5 - Nowhere is the parading of left-wing self-indulgence masquerading as a “Health” Crusade more transparent than in Saskatchewan. Here is: a group of scare-mongering PARASITES at the taxpayer funded trough in Saskatchewan trying to impose their own aesthetics on the population. During their smoking ban campaign these congenital liars and PARASITES were particularly obnoxious – even for liars and PARASITES.

What could the anti-smoking PARASITES possibly do for an encore? Would you believe the Lung Association's next great cause  – BANNING OUTDOOR BACK YARD BONFIRES?

The Bonfires of Vanity are such a huge ”HEALTH” problem that Saskatchewan Lung Association president Paul Van Loon could not document even one single person whose health was affected by a neighbor’s bonfire. Van Loon attributes this to intimidation by neighbours. Yet, when the issue is smoking bans, the Lung Association has no problem lining up the usual hypochondriacs/professional victims.

Surely the Saskatoon Fire Department must have been swamped with calls from the hypochondriacs/professional victims who claim to be allergic to everything from second-hand smoke to perfume (neither is an allergen but wood can be) complaining about outdoor bonfires.  No.  The Saskatoon Fire Chief told the Star-Phoenix he could not recall a single complaint about burning wood in a bonfire. He said they receive about 10 complaints a year ALL involving the burning of illegal substances but not wood.

Yet that great savior of hypochondriacs/professional victims, Paul Van Loon told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that in contradiction to about 1,000 laws of physics, not to mention common sense:

“When they (hypochondriacs/professional victims) experience wood smoke, if that’s a trigger for them, then all their symptoms appear. Whenever you burn in an open situation like that, you produce a lot of smoke and that smoke travels very quickly. It doesn’t just stay in the outdoor environment, it enters the indoor environment .So for those people who are reactive or sensitive to this particular pollutant, they experience difficulties very quickly.”

Make no mistake the wood burning issue is a red herring for the PARASITES at the Saskatchewan Lung Association. Their real agenda here is outdoor smoking bans.

I’m not even going to wallow in the sheer total idiocy of these clowns, who get Millions from the TAXPAYERS OF CANADA – through the generosity of the Federal Liberals, and the Provincial NDP.

I told you earlier what Hitler got for his 100,000 grand. This is what the taxpayers of Saskatchewan and Canada get for our millions.

“Some were dreadfully insulted, and quite seriously to have such an immoral character as A Hero of Our Time. Others shrewdly noticed that the author had portrayed himself and his acquaintances…A Hero of Our Time, gentlemen, is a portrait, but not of an individual, rather, it is the aggregate of the vices of our whole generation in their fullest expression.”

Lermontov, 19th century Russian author of A Hero of Our Time

I have not hidden my intention to get away from reporting and commenting on the latest tobacco news from Canada. I was hoping to write about larger issues than local municipal minutia in Canada.

I viewed this as an alternative to giving up the column entirely. I was ready to quit when I received such a huge outpouring of e-mails from Forces Canada readers asking me to continue. In a future Voice of the People I will share an especially touching one that came from Ottawa of all places. Even though I have gone out of my way to be as mean as possible to Ontarians, the overwhelming percentage of people asking me to stay came from-you guessed it-Ontario. I wish they all could be Ontario girls.

My original intention in this column was to confine the topic to my guest appearance on one of Canada’s most listened to radio call in shows. The topic was of smoking in cars.  Mrs. Lynda Dugay, of Ontario, who now compiles the tobacco news from Canada, made a 7 minute tape of my interview.

Lynda gave my appearance a good review. In 7 minutes of syndicated airtime, Samantha’s newsletter got mentioned three times. I managed to get out the major talking points. For example the interviewer asked me: ”if the proposal to ban smoking in cars was just another example of social-engineering from busy-bodies in government?” Ask me a tough one.

I said: ” When it comes to the issue of smoking-  I'VE HEARD MORE STORIES THAN A STEWARDESS-AND MOST ARE ABOUT AS TRUE.” For some reason this line always gets laughs from women. The guest host of the Charles Adler show was: a woman and a smoker

Much of the discussion involved my theory as to why baby-boomers have not developed lung cancer in huge numbers. This was in response to that other slow-pitch softball:  ”But doesn’t smoking CAUSE lung cancer?”

For a variety of reasons, this entire question, that is the supposed moral raison d’être, of anti-smoking is very misleading. If that argument had any validity, realistically it ended in 1962 with the introduction of filtered cigarettes. The point I tried to make was anti-smoking propaganda is disconnected from both scientific evidence, as well as common sense. I used Keith Richard’s as a symbol of why baby-boomers have not developed lung cancer in any meaningful number. (By the way-Lung Cancer is largely a disease of aging).

I said to the interviewer that if smoking causes lung cancer, why hasn’t Keith Richards or a huge number of baby-boomers yet got lung cancer. Not only have billions of baby-boomers smoked cigarettes in history’s greatest number but, unlike every generation that preceded them, huge numbers also smoke pot, which is a pure carcinogen. The only logical explanation is filtered cigarettes introduced in 1962 cut carcinogen and tar intake by about 90%. Without belaboring the point, we baby-boomers who started smoking filtered cigarettes in the 60s,will all get lung cancer around age 240-give or take 20 years. Too old to Rock&Roll.  Too young to die.

I recently received requests from three separate people to publicize certain stories that would otherwise probably not receive the attention they deserve. One request came from a transplanted Winnipegger now living in Australia who tunes into Forces Canada to see what’s going on in Loserpeg.  The other two came from western Canada.

Dateline - Winnipeg, Manitoba

August 1 - “Thinking at the Winnipeg Free Press is an oxymoron.”

Radio talk show host Charles Adler. Always a man of principle, Adler left the Winnipeg Sun to become a featured columnist at the Winnipeg Free Press. Circulation at the Sun plummeted after he left. The only reason I was interviewed on the Charles Adler show last week was because there was a guest host. On my last and only appearance on the Adler show, he screamed and hung up on me. Charles Adler is an unabashed anti-smoking nut.

Could there be an epiphany of thought going on at the Winnipeg Free Press? It would appear that the always-rabid anti-smoking Free Press is slowly starting to change its tune. A few days ago true to form, the Free Press printed a letter from some know-nothing schmuck blabbing on about the need to ban cell phones and smoking in cars because blah, blah, blah-some anecdote that sounded phonier than a $3 bill that in all likelihood was made up.

Surprisingly, the Free Press printed two separate cogent letters attacking this lunatic. Here is an excerpt from a non-smoker that ran under the headline: Get off ‘ban wagon’.

“Adding one bylaw after another to the already unmanageable regulatory array in this province is not only unrealistic in a financial context, but also has more profound consequences for the limits of lawmakers. A society that forces its government to enact policy against every potentially hazardous behavior must also be prepared to wholly surrender its autonomy and personal freedom. The outcome is absolute.

Intelligence and commonsense cannot be legislated, anymore than they can be enforced.

Other activities can also be distracting to the driver of an automobile. Fighting with a spouse, wiping ice cream from a tot’s face or applying makeup are just a few. Should we ban all these, too?

Laws and bylaws should be enacted not because they are fashionable, but because they are reasonable. Isn’t it time we got off the “ban wagon.”

On the Adler show last week, my message to the people of Manitoba was the sincere hope that blue-collar supporters of the NDP would either stay home or vote Conservative in the next provincial election.

The other noteworthy story out of Loserpeg was a Free Press front-page story on how hospitality revenues have decreased in Manitoba. Could this have anything to do with the province-wide smoking ban? Maybe according to the anti-smoking Free Press. But it could also be attributed to Mad Cow or flooding. Yeah, right.

The Free Press quotes this breathtaking insight from Statistics Canada:

“Drinking places did go down a lot in Manitoba. But we can’t say what its due to. People have to come to their own conclusions.”

Manitoba unlike Monty Python’s Flying Circus does not have a Minister of Silly Walks. Instead we have the NDPs “Minister For Healthy Living” Theresa Oswald, who told the Free Press:” we did expect some short-term negative impact…we knew this would happen”

But isn’t the main PARASITE talking point, backed up with statistics from DOCTOR Roberta Ferrence, of the University of Toronto, that smoking bans are great for business? In the immortal words of Miss Emily Latilla:  ”Oh! That’s very different. NEVER MIND.”

Dateline - Regina, Saskatchewan

August 1 - Saskatchewan like Manitoba has a province-wide smoking ban. Like Manitoba there has been huge losses suffered. But unlike Manitoba, at least Saskatchewan residents are being told the truth about the cause.

The Regina Leader-Post reported that profits from the Saskatchewan gaming commission are down by 33% because of the smoking ban. No game playing about BSE or lousy weather.

Dateline - Edmonton, Alberta

August 1 - I am shocked, shocked to report that according to the Edmonton Sun: ”senior government officials had their offices registered as designated smoking areas so they can smoke on the job.”

Smoking is banned for non-politicians in Edmonton.

Dateline - Vancouver, B.C.

August 1 - And the award for Canada’s biggest moron has to go to the Vancouver Sun’s Mia Stainsby.  Here is a sample from a something entitled Can’t smokers butt out on patios? Isn’t there a fire in Vancouver for Miss Stainsby to cover? Aren’t there huge groups in Vancouver that claim they were abducted by UFOs who require her deft touch?

“When I go buy my organic, fair-trade decaf in the morning, rain or shine, I walk through a narrow phalanx of smokers in the doorway. The coffee’s nice and healthy but I’m steeped in smoke. I’ve ditched the place a couple of times, but returned to replay the irony of getting my healthy cup of coffee.”

Even if this “fair-trade, healthy coffee” was picked by the Maoist wing of the Sandanistas and blessed by the ghost of Che, it still contains 19 carcinogens and 1,000 chemicals, the same as second-hand smoke she finds so distasteful.

You get these kind of asinine comments when “Health” is turned into a left-wing fetish.
