SMOKING, RADON, AND POLONIUM 210

SMOKING AND RADON - Here we go again. The endless alarm about radon (and smoking, of course). "Radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas found in most homes, and smoking can be a lethal combination, British researchers warned Tuesday. Scientists from the Imperial Cancer Research Fund (ICRF), who conducted a study into the effects of the odorless, colorless gas, said it causes one in 20 lung cancer cases in Britain - mostly in conjunction with smoking. 'Residential radon really is a cause of lung cancer,' Professor Sarah Darby told a news conference. 'This study provides, for the first time, direct evidence of the risk associated with residential radon in the UK.' " Evidence against this misleading connection was published since November 1994 by Carol Thompson in an analysis published in 1997 by FORCES Canada. An updated analysis is now available below. In it, enormous studies by scientist of international stature and reputation put to rest the radon scare/antismoking propaganda once again.

AN ANTIDOTE TO RADON SCARE PROPAGANDA - "... Of epidemiologic studies with measured radon levels in the subjects' homes, comparable to the UK study, Ltourneau et al. is the most valuable, because it includes smokers while some others did not, and because of the much higher radon levels in Canada - much higher than in Finland, China, US, or the UK."

The Anti-Smokers Lie About Smoking And Radon - Two or Three years ago, the antismoking cartel tried very hard to push the concept that smokers are radioactive with Polonium 210, and Radon. Fortunately, except in mental cases, most of the people did not swallow at least this lie. This analysis complete with plenty of medical study references nails this coffin of lies. Yet the Canadian Cancer Society keeps pushing this absurdity, which qualifies this organization even more for what it has become: a conglomerate of greedy political activists with no respect whatsoever for professionality and common sense.

THE GREAT RADON FLAP - 'One respected scientist, University of Pittsburgh professor emeritus of physics and environmental health, has conducted studies that do not support the report's conclusions. His data, involving radon measurements in more than 350,000 homes and a comparison of average radon levels in 1,728 U.S. counties, were compared with local lung cancer rates. The comparison showed that the higher the radon level, the less cancer there was. Cohen, whose work has been praised by Nobel Laureates Rosalyn Yalow and Hans Bethe, complained that the research council preparing the latest government report "didn't want to talk to me." ' We are not surprised.
