After the WHO's MONICA study, here is:

TRENDS IN THE INCIDENCE OF MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION AND IN MORTALITY DUE TO CORONARY HEART DISEASE, 1987 TO 1994

COMMENTARY - In this study it is very interesting to see that notwithstanding the sharp decrease in smoking, the rate of hospitalization for Coronary Heart Disease has actually increased. It is also interesting to see how the explanations for this "mystery" go in every possible direction, but the most instinctive and logical one: smoking does not cause CHD. But this would mean proving once again that the dogma dictating that tobacco is an absolute health evil is false, and this is, of course, not politically acceptable, for the government grant money and the support of the pharmaceutical industry might be seriously compromised.

Study after study demonstrates the inability of political science to seriously link disease with tobacco, except perhaps the demonstration of an increased statistical risk of lung cancer. The political dogma from which certain science has proceeded in the last 30 years (tobacco IS the cause of disease) continues to fail to prove its solidity. Nevertheless, hundreds of millions of dollars keep pouring into this credo, while scientific information that fails to prove the dogma is packaged by spin doctors to project the impression that tobacco is an epidemic that needs to be stopped, no matter what means are to be used.

It is quite possible that the use of tobacco will be greatly reduced, at least in North America. Given the virtually unlimited funds available to the anti-tobacco movement, even the most revolting lie, when repeated often enough, may become the frail foundation of a new truth, especially when taught to children at a tender age.

But regardless of the outcome, the facts stay the same: notwithstanding the immense means of the anti-tobacco movement, the propaganda, the bias of the media, the lawsuits, and the politically motivated statements by corrupted "professionals," science still has not proven that tobacco kills -- or hurts -- according to its own standards.
