Yesterday's Recycled Garbage Makes Today's New Manure
FORCES - Evidence by topic - Back to: Proving the lies of the anti-tobacco cartel: The Evidence YESTERDAY'S RECYCLED GARBAGE MAKES TODAY'S NEW MANURE NCI SHOULD HANG ITS HEAD IN SHAME Dear FORCES: Out of curiosity I dug out the 1997 Cal/EPA report (now repackaged as NCI's new Monograph 10) and was reminded what a joke it is.NCI should hang its head in shame. Cal/EPA concludes that "The consistency of the findings in the five recent studies and the meta-analysis result of the U.S. EPA indicates about a 20% increased risk of lung cancer in nonsmokers" exposed to ETS.(Cal/EPA report p. 7-30) So there you have it.Cal/EPA based its conclusion on a discredited EPA report plus findings from five recent studies, the majority of which found no statistically significant increased risk according to Cal/EPA's own Tables 7.5 and 7.5B! Equally absurd is Cal/EPA's conclusion (p. 7-59) that ETS exposure is "causually associated" with nasal sinus cancer. What, exactly, is Cal/EPA's evidence"Well, it turns out to be three -- I repeat, three -- studies, most of which show no statistically significant increased risk(Cal/EPA Table 7.8). What's more, one of those 3 studies was Hirayama, and get this:"Active smoking was not associated with nasal sinus cancer in this study" (Cal/EPA p. 7-32).Gee, that makes sense. Active smoking isn't associated with nasal sinus cancer but ETS is"!Too bad this little gem and others like it are hidden deep within the Cal/EPA report, that no one reads. Martha Perske MORE LIES ON NCI MONOGRAPH 10
![]() November 24, 1999 What a joke! The NCI just issued a press release portraying the 1997 Cal/EPA report (which made headlines two years ago) as "new" and "the most comprehensive report on the health risks of second hand smoke ever conducted." New"""Indeed, the tobacco control gang at NCI must be desperate to try to pull this off to make it appear as if new, fresh "evidence" is coming up. Since then, this piece of fraud has been debunked by several parties, a Federal Court has gunned down the EPA report on ETS, The World Health Organisation's own huge study on second hand smoke has not just failed to show any lung cancer effect, but it has even shown a protective effect [1]. Too bad for the WHO! Another gargantuan WHO study has failed to show any connection even between primary smoking and heart disease, while tons of other evidence and studies have failed to prove harmful effects of ETS - in fact proving that there are none [2] [3] [4] ETC.. The anti-tobacco cartel running out of lies & frauds" Hard to believe, they have too much money. Certainly, more are cooked as we print with ever more ludicrous claims (click here for an example), but for now there seems to be a gap. The NCI's press release deceptively refers to it as "today's report...the new report...the new findings."Not once does it mention that this "new report" was published in 1997.Ah, but then the public's none the wiser, right"Tsk, tsk, you little big cheat NCI! Even more incredible is today's Reuters wire ("Secondhand smoke linked to more health risks") which refers to it as "the new government report."No mention whatsoever that it's the Cal/EPA report.Whooeeey, talk about misleading the public! In the NCI press release, an over-zealous Carol Browner talks about how this "new" report "confirms" that, among otherthings, cigarettes "threaten the health of anyone who is even near a lighted cigarette, especially children." Shut up, you liar. Well, we'll see who in the media falls for it.Reuters did -- hook, line and sinker! But did it really - or is it just consciously pushing the antismoking fraud just another step" After all, it is well known that Reuters, as every good moputhpiece of the anti-tobacco cartel, is only too eager to put forward every piece of fraud against tobacco while ignoting the other face of the coin.
How's that for a philosophy of cheat" (finding by Wanda Hamilton) If anyone wants to ask Richard Klausner, M.D., Director of the National Cancer Institute, how NCI justifies portraying the Cal/EPA report as "new," his address is:National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD20892. And since it's unethical for a government agency to knowingly mislead the public, as NCI appears to have done, it is possible to register a complaint with Stephen D. Potts, Director of U.S. Office of Government Ethics, 1201 New York Ave., NW, Suite 500, Washington DC, 20005-3917. ANTI-TOBACCO CARTEL IN GARBAGE RECYCLE MODE: HERE IS ANOTHER ONE The fact that the anti-tobacco cartel is (temporarily, we believe) running out of new scams and frauds to present to the public is more evident in this other "recycling episode". Below we are reporting (and humouring) one of the latest "findings" of the international cartel: "Breast cancer linked to smoking and ETS at puberty." It has been brought to our attention that even this absurd claim is not new but actually one year old, though presented by the Aussie niconazis at "the latest finding." We are linking to a Steven Milloy's commentary of that "study" dating back to December, 1998. "Ho-ho-ho! No, that's not Santa Claus. That's me doing a seasonal "Ha-ha-ha!" after reading a new study in the January 1, 1999 issue of the American Journal of Epidemiology reporting that secondhand smoke is associated with breast cancer. " Happy reading. After all, we are close to Christmas, aren't we" |
