Reported in the graphic below are the sales of cigarettes in Canada in 1996, compared to the 1995 figure. The increase in quantity is truly remarkable.

 While we agree with the anti smokers that the increase is due to a large number of youth taking up smoking, it is clear to us and to any reasonable person that prohibition -- and the great fanfare about tobacco -- are the paramount in attracting youth to smoking.

 Of course, the antis point at the tobacco industry's billboards as the reason for the increase in smoking. But we know better. Nations where tobacco promotion has always been forbidden, the smoking proportion of the population is the same, or higher than North America -- never lower.
