Dear Forces,
I support your campaign for smoker's rights and I enjoy smoking myself but
there is something that troubles me. I am very much in favour of animal
rights and I do not agree with testing on animals. My friend said that
cigarette companies harm animals by testing on them. Is there any way that
I can't still smoke but not support companies that test on animals? I do
know that anti-smoking groups also test on animals but that doesn't make
me feel any better.
Thank you,
Lisa
Dear
Lisa,
Thank you for writing. Although we are sympathetic to what you feel, it is
also true that virtually all industries, for a reason or another, are
testing on animals: food, cosmetics -- drug companies especially -- test on
animals. Unfortunately, there is no other way to test things sometimes, as
the alternative is to test on humans. If you feel that way about smoking and
testing, you may as well stop eating, using make-up, soaps and detergents --
and especially and absolutely don't take any medicine, as they ALL go
through extensive animal testing.
It's a sad
reality. Having
said that, it is true that in some cases animal testing is now much more
restricted, particularly when the substance being tested has met the
standards of animal testing in the past. What is the situation in the
tobacco industry? We honestly do not know. If any of our readers or members
can enlighten us on this, we would be grateful. Regards,
