Jennifer Parris, Go green: A breath of fresh air: Improving neighborhood air quality

In 2008, Money Magazine's "Best Places to Live" again ranked Santa Cruz as among the best cities in the nation for the quality of our air. With 99.2 percent of our days considered "good" according to the Air Quality Index, we are situated firmly in 12th place, ahead of neighboring city Monterey 14th place, 98.9 percent.

Even in our lovely coastal climate, we can still suffer the effects of air pollution. Air quality can vary from moment to moment and from neighborhood to neighborhood, depending on the activities of residents. In other words, among other factors, the health of your lungs is very much dependent on your neighbors.

In the act of simply lighting a fire, trimming our lawns or even starting our cars, we can unintentionally inflict harm on our families and our neighbors by creating air pollution right where we live. Here are three common contributors to poor neighborhood air quality.

The problem: Wood smoke~snip~

What you can do ~snip~
Buy EPA registered Wood Stoves - that won't work for the Greenies but will generate stoves sales and more regulation

The problem: Emissions from gas-powered mowers ~snip~

What you can do~snip~
The article suggests buying a SOLAR lawnmower - How cool is that - SOOOOOLAR!!....or you can buy a push mower and rake - it's exercise!!!

The problem: Emissions from starting your car~snip~

What you can do~snip~

Ride a bike or take the bus - yeah....OK/sarc

Negligible Effect of Global Greenhouse Gas Emission Limits

Observed Climate Change & the Negligible Effect of Global Greenhouse Gas Emission Limits in Alabama
http://scienceandpublicpolicy.org/origi ... ofile.html

Summary for Policy Makers

This report provides a review of Alabama’s climate history and reveals that there is no observational evidence of unusual long-term climate changes taking place that could be linked to anthropogenic “global warming” — despite scientifically unsupportable claims and frequent prognostications of gloom and doom.

Instead of rising temperatures, the state’s annual average temperature has declined over the past century. :shock:

But far more troublesome is that while emissions reduction plans would have no impact on Alabama’s or global climate, they would have a large and negative impact of the state’s economy and citizens’ liberties.

Such fear-driven, ill-thought through mitigation plans are a perfect policy recipe for disaster — they are all pain and no gain. :shock:

As writer Frank Herbert observed, “Fear is the mind-killer.”

Saving the Earth?

Saving the Earth?

The general opinion seems to be that the mass of the earth is about 6 septillion (6,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) kilograms, which is equivalent to 1.32 times 10^25 pounds avoirdupois (13,200,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 lb).
http://www.funtrivia.com/askft/Question53844.html

Elevators are set for a safe average weight of 155 pounds per person.

6 billion people x 155 lbs. per person = 930 billion lbs. as the total weight of humanity.

Earth = 13,200,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 lbs.

Mankind =-----------------------930,000,000,000 lbs.

All of mankind weights 1/14 trillionth as much as the Earth.

1 lb of mankind per 14,000,000,000,000 lbs of Earth.

That is the same as 1 inch compared to 220,960,000 miles(221 million).

Mankind makes about as much difference to the Earth as would microbes on the roof of a house impact that house!! :roll:

Destroying the Atmosphere?

Postby gary k » Sun Mar 08, 2009 4:57 pm

Man kind's activities are destroying the atmosphere?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth's_atmosphere
Pressure and thickness
Main article: Atmospheric pressure
The average atmospheric pressure, at sea level, is about 101.3 kilopascals (14.69 psi); total atmospheric mass is 5.1480Ă—1018 kg (1.135Ă—10 to the 19th lb).[3]

Earth's atmosphere =11,350,000,000,000,000,000 lbs

Mankind =--------------------------- 930,000,000,000 lbs

.9 lb to 12,204,301 lbs or 1 lb to about 13 million lbs.

That is like 1 inch to 205 miles.

There are 13 million lbs of atmosphere for every 1 lb of humanity.

I weigh 200 lbs, does anyone really believe that my activities can screw up 2,600,000,000(2.6 billion) pounds of atmosphere?? :shock: :shock:
