In 2008, Money Magazine's "Best Places to Live" again ranked Santa Cruz as among the best cities in the nation for the quality of our air. With 99.2 percent of our days considered "good" according to the Air Quality Index, we are situated firmly in 12th place, ahead of neighboring city Monterey 14th place, 98.9 percent.
Even in our lovely coastal climate, we can still suffer the effects of air pollution. In other words, among other factors, the health of your lungs is very much dependent on your neighbors.
In the act of simply lighting a fire, trimming our lawns or even starting our cars, we can unintentionally inflict harm on our families and our neighbors by creating air pollution right where we live. Here are three common contributors to poor neighborhood air quality.
