STRONG OPPOSITION TO ANTISMOKING LAW IN ITALY Flash news update - July 12, 2000 - The proposed California-style law that would ban smoking almost everywhere in Italy is encountering strong resistance and criticism in the country. Called by the political coalition of the right "unfair and prevaricating", the proposed law is also opposed by several business organisations. The right is expected to win the next elections by a sizeable margin. Private television has portrayed smokers giving the Great Italian Gesture to Health Minister Veronesi while holding two lit cigarettes in their mouths. Some daily newspapers are highlighting the scientific fraud concerning passive smoke. Many have defined the proposed law as the last desperate act of a dying leftist government hoping to regain the attention of the public after the devastating defeat suffered at the last referendum. MINISTERS' COUNCIL APPROVES LAW PROPOSAL THAT WOULD START SMOKERS' PERSECUTION IN ITALY On Friday, July 7th, the Italian press reported that a law proposal on smoking has received preliminary approval from the Ministers' Council of the Italian government, paving the way for a parliamentary debate and vote. The proposal would initiate the process of smokers marginalisation from society by forbidding smoking in ALL enclosed places. The Italian Minister of Health, Umberto Veronesi, has officially embraced the international antismoking cartel by stating the untruth that "there is no doubt that second hand smoke causes cancer". That claim is based on a scientific fraud which is at the foundation of prohibition all over the world. A strong confrontation is expected during the legislative procedure required to turn the proposal into law. He has been an articulate and eloquent spokesman for liberty (and has even been one of the few mainstream columnists to write fairly and accurately on the tobacco issue). The Globe had hired him as a dissident voice to demonstrate "balance" to the leftist liberalism. But apparently, Jeff was gaining too much of a following, so now The Globe has suspended him on the flimsiest of excuses (that he wrote a column on the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and did not acknowledge that others had also written on this same topic). Another voice for liberty and choice is about to be silenced. Write an e-mail to the Boston Globe. Give them a call (617. 929.2000). Send a fax (617.929.2098). Read his side of the story by clicking on the first header. Help to keep alive the Freedom of Expression. At FORCES, we are all with you, Jeff! "When state attorneys general joined up with private
personal injury lawyers to go after Big Tobacco, their partnership and the billions it
produced for state coffers were hailed in many circles. Critics were dismissed as "Since tobacco, however, municipalities have bonded with wealthy personal-injury lawyers to go after the gun industry, and Rhode Island has marched in against the manufacturers of lead paint, although the product has not been sold for decades. One could argue that lead and guns fit into the tobacco paradigm. But how about latex and automobiles?" THE PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY -- TO WHOM IS IT ACCOUNTABLE? "The marketing budgets of the drug industry are enormous -- much larger than the research and development costs -- although exact figures are difficult to come by, in part because marketing and administrative expenses are often folded together and in part because some of the research and development budget is for marketing research. According to its annual report, Pfizer spent 39.2 percent of its revenues on marketing and administration in 1999 ; Pharmacia & Upjohn is reported to have spent about the same."
American Madness Flash
News With tobacco consumers all but bled dry, the grant-junkies, non-profit shakedown artists and high-stakes ambulance chasers are turning their rapacious graze to new Golden Geese. The smart money says the next targets are the chubby and their suppliers, the fast-food industry. Another government predatory attempt defeated"A U.S. federal judge has thrown out the $1-billion Canadian government lawsuit that accused one of the country's big tobacco companies of evading billions of dollars in taxes by smuggling cigarettes into Canada. The decision to dismiss the federal government's lawsuit -- believed to be the largest ever launched by Ottawa -- is a stunning and costly setback for Allan Rock, the Health Minister, and the federal government, which has already paid a record $3.76-million in fees for high-powered U.S. legal representation." Congratulations to the tobacco industry and who has paid for this last predatory, fanatical attempt while the Canadian haelth care system in in shambles? The Canadian Taxpayers, of course!
Did you think that a glass of wine is good for you? WRONG! WINE CAUSES CANCER! WINE INSTITUTE IGNORES STUDY CONFIRMING INCREASED RISK AT LESS THAN A GLASS PER DAY"Armed with recent findings confirming that alcohol consumption increases the risk of breast cancer in women, Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) renewed its opposition to wine industry proposals to promote the health benefits of alcohol on wine labels." "Tobacco road" for alcohol? - THEY'RE BELLYING UP TO THE BAR! Anti-alcohol activists clearly have lawyers in mind for a direct assault on the adult beverages industry. If and when they do try to sue, look for MADD and others to take "tobacco road" to avoid personal responsibility issues while heading for class-action cash coffers.
"We nonsmokers are sick and tired of helping to pay for your bad habit!" Chances are, youve heard that line usually from people suffering from too much media exposure to secondhand arguments. Whats the real story on smoking and public costs? Pierre Lemieux, a Visiting Professor of Economics at the Université du Québec in Canada, explains what the economists are actually saying, and provides a reading list for those who want to find out more. ' Not only has the Europa remained smoker-friendly, it also displays a remarkable little sign on the tables in its restaurants, lobby, bars and rooms, entitled "Courtesy of Choice." Underneath the heading are the following words, "The concept and symbol of Courtesy of Choice reflects the centuries-old philosophy that acknowledges differences while allowing them to exist together in harmony." |
