– Money
talks
– In
what appears to be a surprising development the University of California
overwhelmingly rejected a ban on tobacco funding used for research purposes.
The issue has been broiling for years with a few loud faculty members demanding
that the university spurn Big Tobacco's largesse. Stanton Glantz, the
mechanical engineer turned anti-tobacco activist, has been the most vociferous
in working to give the tobacco industry the boot. Glantz, of course, is
lavishly funded by the pharmaceutical industry to produce his "research" that
has been so shoddy and agenda-driven that his credibility, never solid, is now a
joke.
The huge
university's decision to allow the cigarette manufacturers to bestow
research grants cannot be portrayed as a victory. The industry will
continue to be demonized and slandered and any research it funds, no matter
how stellar, that runs counter to the anti-tobacco orthodoxy as represented
by Glantz and his cohorts will continue to be discounted and derided. At
some point the greed for funding will be overridden by the need to jump on
the damn-the-tobacco-industry bandwagon and the same faculty members who
voted to keep Big Tobacco in the research sugar daddy club will vote to give
the industry the back of their hands. Big Tobacco should remove all funding
from a corrupt university and funnel them into lobbying and public relations
efforts to restore sanity to a political and cultural system that is owned
by anti-tobacco.

– Snivelling
conformity over at Ronnie Scott’s
–
Jazz and freedom seem like a natural blend, somehow. But over at the venerable
Ronnie Scott’s jazz club in London, Blairite political correct rules the day.
Let’s see what kind of groove they find themselves in on the day that drinking
in nightclubs is “monitored” by logging every cocktail on a customer’s NHS card
to create a “helpful” individualised health profile of every customer, and
mandatory cameras keep all the jazz fans under close scrutiny while they
“relax”. Let’s see what will be left then.

Rabid antismoker
denied her wish and gets evicted!
– A small great victory in Kingston, Ontario: “The provincial Landlord and
Tenant Board this week released its decision on the case of Sharna Sugarman, who
had asked for relief from cigarette smoke she said was entering her second-floor
apartment through the floor vents from the apartment downstairs. The board
dismissed her application, and granted a subsequent application by her landlords
to evict her so their parents can move into the
Montreal Street
unit. Sugarman and her young daughter must vacate the apartment by the end of
next month.”
Yes! Good on
the Landlord and Tenant Board and excellent for the smoking neighbour. Who
needs antismoking hysterics in an apartment building, anyway? There must be
no room for antismoking trash in a civilized society. Unfortunately society (and
especially governments) are not civilized, these days, thus
the
Canadian health Reich is working hard to make smoking illegal in multi-dwelling
units to completely bypass the issue and force citizens’ behaviour to fit
its politics.

Bloomberg: Ross Perot on steroids
– “Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of
New York, has
put aside $1 billion to run for president. This is Ross Perot on steroids,
folks. He wants Chuck Hagel as his running mate, or Hagel wants to be his
running mate. Don't laugh at this. A billion dollars! He's got millions more
than that, billions more than that. This is going to be interesting. This is a
guy on a trans-fat ban, smoking ban, green up the city. Is the country really
ready for somebody who absolutely believes in our freedom to abort babies, but
not to smoke or eat trans-fats in public? We'll find out.”
Let’s really hope not. There is enough enviro-healthist trash as it is, and it
will take a few generations to heal—if it does not get any worse, that is.
On trans-fat and CSPI
- This just came across a
PR Newswire.
It's from our old buddies at the Center for Science and the Public Interest. I
think this guy's name is Michael Jacobson. This is the guy who has taken coconut
oil out of movie theater popcorn. This is the guy that's tried to tell you that
Chinese food will cause you to die. Everything you eat, by the way, is going to
cause you to die. As though you're never going to die! They have just filed a
lawsuit against Burger King because they use trans-fat. "By using partially
hydrogenated oil, Burger King is knowingly increasing its customers' risk of
heart disease and early death, according to a lawsuit filed today by the
nonprofit Center for Science and the Public Interest." Now, a number of
things on this. In the first place, we've got a movement against trans-fats in
this country. How did this get started? It got started like the left and
liberals start everything: this is about power. It's about control. This is an
assault on freedom. It's an assault on private enterprise. It all comes under
this umbrella or imprimatur of health." Rush goes on with other interesting
considerations. But there is one thing that must be added: the "dangers" of
trans-fat are as scientifically demonstrated as those of passive smoke. Need we
say more?... Another criminal assault base on junk science by the health Nazis,
Marxists at heart.

Smoking room a hit at bingo hall
– There is a reason why the antitobacco rot wants total smoking bans: to avoid
verification of what people really want. Case in point, this happy story is
telling us about the incredible success of a smoking bingo hall right from the
start.
“A cigarette in one hand, a dauber in the other. That's how bingo should
be played, say those who drove as long as an hour last night to this London-area
reserve where Ontario's aggressive anti-smoking rules don't apply and a new hall
lets visitors light up while playing.”
An area of liberty, still protected from
the Nazis. What a joy reading these words:
“Duval estimates his Windsor business
dropped by nearly half when it was forced to go smoke-free. The reserve doesn't
have to abide by those same rules and the local health unit has admitted it's
powerless to stop the indoor smoking.”
Powerless is the key word here. Political
power must be taken away from “public health”, which bypasses any democratic
system to grab it. The only power “public health” must have is over public
toilets and contagious disease—the way it should be, the way it is meant to
be.

Blair’s legacy: oppression, fear, shrivelling liberty
–
As British Prime Minister Tony Blair gets set to leave office, commentators are
busy offering various explanations as to how and why the initially extremely
popular New Labour leader fell from grace with the public. He was in office too
long, they say, he failed to live up to his promises, he got embroiled in Iraq
and got too close to the Bush neoconservatives. Yet the most striking domestic
legacy of Tony Blair has been the rise of an increasingly jack-boot style social
policy. As he moves from the scene, his successors face the choice of EITHER
ramping up an oppressive surveillance-and-control program (which seems headed in
the direction of eugenic social engineering, and round-the-clock spying on
citizens in every publicly-accessible place complete with the hectoring of
children’s voices over loudspeakers, to mention just a few Blairite
“improvements” ) OR rolling back this shameful anti-freedom juggernaut. It’s not
just about smoking. But so many people have been lulled into thinking that New
Health and New Social Control is “just” about this or that “minor” matter that
the dreadful import of events has failed to register with them.
“Blair’s New
Labour party transformed Britain into an open prison. Virtually no area of life
is free from the party’s prying eyes and super-nannyism. Prior to the party’s
victory in the General Election in 1997 you could walk through your local town
or city without worrying about being filmed by the authorities. You could pop
into a local pub for a relaxing drink and a smoke, pubs having long been
considered a haven from the pressures of everyday life. At the weekend you could
unwind by cheering on your favourite football team in one of Britain’s many
soccer stadiums. No longer. Everyday life has now been colonized by the
Blairites.”
Even senior people in law enforcement are beginning to get rattled by the trend.
Deputy chief constable of Hampshire Ian Readhead recently
went on the record
expressing
his fears about what’s going on:
"I'm really
concerned about what happens to the product of these cameras, and what comes
next? If it's in our villages, are we really moving
towards an Orwellian situation where cameras are at every street corner? And I
really don't think that's the kind of country that I want to live in."

– Free
Expression Gets Smoked
– This
is another article that decries the inroads anti-tobacco has made in stifling
speech in the United States. The author this time doesn't merely complain
about the growing power of the "nanny" nation but instead criticizes the 32
state attorneys general who instructed the film industry on the appropriate
content of movies. He has a problem with elected officials who swore an
oath to support the U.S. Constitution violating those oaths to impose curbs on
the First Amendment. It's unfortunate he doesn't detail how anti-tobacco
operatives have for at least 10 years pressured politicians to crack down on
movies that show smoking, which, after all, is a lawful activity that is
entwined inextricably in the American culture. Mayhem, kinky copulation,
promiscuous drug use and horrendous pathologies are routine in much of
Hollywood's fare but all are to be tolerated as free expression. Only
smoking is to be prohibited.
The
author does discuss the "evidence" used to persuade the attorneys general to
demand censorship. As to be expected there is no real evidence, only a
passel of research financed by drug companies that wouldn't pass muster in
the days when logic, facts and integrity were operating principles in the
nation's university system. He cites Steve Milloy, the nation's premier
debunker of junk science as well as tobacco control advocate Michael Siegel,
whose lonesome campaign to restore integrity to tobacco research has made
him a pariah with the corrupt gang who now set the tone.
The REAL reasons why “public health” wants blanket bans

Non-smoking
cafe becomes a smoking cafe
– The owner of
a cafe in Steinenvorstadt (Switzerland) was taken for a ride by the local
antismoking group which, as usual, promised that her business would be booming
if only her locale became fully non-smoking.
Like most hospitality industry
operators, she fell for the bait.
But after a few
weeks she realized that very few customers were walking in, and that her
business was doing really badly. So she decide to open a smoking section and the
clientele started to walk in. No customers, neither smokers nor non smokers,
have given her any problem whatsoever. Rather, there is
notably more vivacity in the locale. Of course, the smoking section is by far the most
popular, so now she is thinking about eliminating the non-smoking section
altogether.
Ah, the wonders
of the free market! In Switzerland like everywhere else, it is clear what the REAL
preference of smokers and non smokers is—and it is a happy locale where
smoking is allowed and people can enjoy themselves in peace. And that is also the REAL
reason why “public health” trash wants blanket smoking bans: to prevent people
from choosing, and showing instead a non-existing “consensus” for bans
based on the public fraud of passive smoke. The “New Public Health” is the enemy of
liberty, and truth.

'I
smoke for my mental health'
– David Hockney, one of the most important painters
produced by the UK in the post-war period, has spoken out against the
anti-smoking brigade, affirming his own fondness for tobacco and reflecting on
the health crusaders and their media enablers.
Despite his fame, Hockney reports that when it came to his dissident views on
the smoking issue, it was difficult for him even to get a letter to the editor
published. Here he offers encouragement to others who are feeling overwhelmed by
the Orwellian tide of the moment.
“Two
months ago I started the largest painting I've ever done: 15ft x 40ft. The
moment I began I found myself running up the stairs (with a fag) and realised
some people are more in tune with a life force than others. I can't be the only
voice like this. In England people should speak up more, defend themselves, but
it's hard against all the forces at work. Two million anti-smoking signs are
going up on July 1, including inside Westminster Abbey. The uglification of
England is under way by people with no vision.
I detest it. “

Coloured citizens on that side of the deck
–
After
running wild with the ETS (Environmental Tobacco Smoke) fraud, Canadian
authorities now are on the run with the OTS (Outdoors Tobacco Smoke), the latest
fraudulent excuse of governments to criminalize smokers. In the 21st
century Apartheid we see that smokers are the new “coloured” citizen – coloured
by their freedom of choice for a lifestyle that “public health” trash has
decided to target and to “socially denormalize”. This is the case of British Columbia Ferries,
long ago adopting prohibition and segregation.
“BC Ferries
will designate smoking areas on the outer decks of half its fleet of passenger
ferries before the year's end. Smoking is now permitted anywhere on the outside
decks, although it's prohibited on car decks and interior areas.”
And here is the ritual reciting of the fraud:
“That's the option preferred by
Dr. Richard Stanwick, chief medical health officer for the Vancouver Island
Health Authority, especially given the way winds shift on ferry decks.
Two or three smokers, even six metres away, can deliver a significant amount
of tobacco smoke, said Stanwick. That dose of carcinogens will be
more powerful depending on whether it's up- or downwind, he added.”
Stanwick
is a liar, of course, like all antismokers. How the winds shift in
connection with the huge
emission of the powerful diesel engines moving the boat doesn’t seem to worry Dr. Stanwick at all. Yet, even this is not good enough for the “health” scum, as a
total ban is advocated. Do you still think that this has to do with health? "Public health" is purging
society of smokers. Time for smokers to purge the rot out of "public health".
Good riddance!

Philip
Morris to leave German Cigarette Industry Association
– This comes as
no surprise, as the interests and strategies of Big Tobacco are increasingly
diverging in Germany. One major company strongly campaigns against smoking bans
in pubs, others remain silent or lobby only behind closed doors, whereas Philip
Morris Germany has fully adopted the US strategy of getting on its knees and
praising public health frauds and dictatorship.
The
Marlboro Cowboy now declares that he supports “a comprehensive regulation of
tobacco business in Germany, guided by public health objectives“.
PM is as bigoted

getting bigger by demanding regulation that is supposed to harm their
competitors more than them, e.g. by stricter advertising bans and higher taxes
for Roll Your Own/MYO tobacco.

– The
Real World Bank Problem
– The
generally obscure World Bank has been in the news lately, roiled by a scandal.
Like much reported by the mainstream media the World Bank story is not only much
ado about nothing but also a good example of how the media betray the
truth-telling role that should define them. George Will brushes aside the
politically-motivated circumstances that have thrust the World Bank into public
consciousness and hones in on what should be the story about this global entity,
namely whether this relic of the Second World War should continue to exist.
Much of
what recipient countries save by receiving the bank's subsidized loans they
pay in the costs of " technical assistance," the euphemism for being
required to adopt the social agendas of the rich nations' governments that
fund the bank. Those agendas focus on intrusive government actions on behalf
of fashionable causes -- the empowerment of women, labor, environmentalism,
indigenous peoples, etc.
Will omits
anti-tobacco activism from the fashionable social agendas so dear to the
rich nations that form the bank's policies. But as we've noted for a long
time, loans to impoverished nations are always accompanied by demands that
the recipients ban smoking, tax tobacco and demonize smokers. Not only do
these requirements not further economic development, they actually
perpetuate the cycle of poverty that is chronic with the developing
economies. The bank argues that its clients value the "technical assistance"
and are just itching to ban smoking, reduce carbon footprints and embrace
girrrl power. In reality, the loans the poor countries seek are bribes to
embrace and finance the "progressive" programs so beloved by Manhattan's
Upper West Side and Berkeley social engineers.
As a
testament to the World Bank's actual irrelevancy, data show that 90 percent
of the bank's loans accrue to two dozen middle-income countries that receive
99 percent of their loans from private institutions. Because the World Bank
is not a necessary financial component of the developing economies, its only
effect is the spread and imposition of the rich countries' phobias.
As such, the World Bank is a partner, although an inferior one, to the
multi-national pharmaceutical industry that is corrupting governments across
the globe, including the rich ones, to enact policies solely to fatten up
Big Drugs' bottom line. Don't worry about ousting the current head of the
World Bank, just get rid of the Bank entirely.

New study reveals another potential contraindication to FDA tobacco legislation
– Since its inception, FORCES has promoted the notion that nicotine in
cigarettes is to be increased rather than decreased. In fact, the more the
nicotine, the less one smokes. That is a scientifically (not epidemiologically)
established fact. If the amount of toxins in cigarettes were high enough to
cause harm, then this would be a point of pivotal importance. The Food and Drug Administration's regulation
of nicotine may push things in the wrong direction, that is, towards a
cigarette with less and less nicotine, using the addiction BS theory for which
nicotine is “extremely addictive”—so addictive in fact, that they tell you
that you can quit smoking by using the pharmaceutical version, identical
to that of cigarettes!
As Michael
Siegel explains, new research shows that our position on nicotine boosting has
been correct all along. While the small amounts of toxins in current
cigarettes do create harm or not is still questionable (in spite of the
propaganda), one thing that is sure is that a low nicotine or nicotine-free
cigarette will increase the amounts of toxins taken in. It is of little
surprise that Philip Morris—now one and the same with the worst of the
antismoking movement—supports an FDA regulation that may
in turn reduce
nicotine in cigarettes. The whole idea is that there will be a market sharing in
this dirty deal: the FDA will pull the nicotine out of cigarettes so that Big
Pharma will be able to sell it. It's all at the expense of smokers, of course, the new disposable citizens who don’t seem to ever rebel, no matter how
much they are abused.

– The
nasty nicotine revelation
– Researchers
from the Medical University of Vienna (in collaboration with international
toxicologists) have made a ground-breaking discovery: Nicotine Replacement Therapies
contain nicotine drugs! Therefore patients get “addicted” and have a higher risk
for the usual diseases. According to the Austrian researchers, pharma nicotine
should not be prescribed to teenagers and pregnant women. Moreover, in order
to fight nicotine “addiction”, nicotine drugs, patches etc. should not be
available to the general public at all.
So, dear
anti-smokers, let’s fight the evil nicotine sellers from Big Pharma! -

Columnist
calls for smokers to start demonstrating
–
An American columnist remarks on the start of new
non-smoking policies at Disney hotels and resorts (‘Disney cites "no demand" as
their official excuse for introducing a 100 percent smoking ban. I don't believe
it.’) and calls for smokers to grow spines and demand accommodation.
“…smokers should adopt some of the very same tactics the civil right movement
employed more than a generation ago,” he states. “Demonstrate for your rights.
In county and state capitals. In
Washington, too. Maybe even in London.” We would be tempted to say
that he is calling for the obvious -- except for the fact that so very few
people in the mainstream media dare speak out for smokers, or question the
antismoking lobby’s endlessly parroting.
This columnist mentions a key fact which most news coverage of the smoking wars
tries mightily to avoid: “A few years ago, the U.N. commissioned a study of, as
the agency said, the "harmful" effects of second-hand smoke. When the study came
up minus conclusive proof, the results were suppressed.”
It’s always heartening to see the occasional journalist informing himself enough
to challenge the received truths of anti-smoking jihadists. Yet it’s frustrating
that this doesn’t happen more often. Almost everyone in the press is terrified
of rattling any cage which might annoy readership or lead to any further drops
in ad revenues. Traditional media are all suffering economically these days, and
the worse things get, the more relentlessly they conform to medium or lower
norms, popular prejudice, and “news” consisting of rewritten government press
releases. But it’s vitally important for the news media to be sceptical about
Big Health. The self-styled lifestyle cleansers see their crusade as just the
start of something bigger. They must be called to account – more often, more
loudly, and more proudly.

Freedom of expression is one enemy of the antitobacco movement
– …And, like all its enemies (amongst them, freedom of choice, liberty,
constitutions, real science and freedom of enterprise) the antismoking movement
works hard to wipe them out. This interesting article by Steve Chapman points
out the futility of the MPAA’s new position that cigarettes are an element for
determining the movies’ ratings, since 75% of them are already rated R for other
reasons – and because of the wide-spread use of home theatres, we may add. But
one thing is omitted: this is the result of pharmaceutical money at work. Yes,
the pharmaceutical industry again. Just as one example amongst many, Robert Wood
Johnson Foundation (RWJF) pays off the
UCSF San Francisco and Stanton Glantz the modest amount of
$9.8-million dollars in a 5-year program to promote false information about
smoking as well as suffocation of freedom of expression. With that kind of
financing there can be no surprise, therefore, that censorship on freedom of
expression is reliable. The marketers of Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical
nicotine sure don’t care about that.

Crackdown: the wonderful incoherence of hypocrisy
– What a wonderful initiative in Alberta: crack down on hate crimes:
“When it comes to hate crime, Edmonton is sending a zero tolerance
message.”
Ah, zero
tolerance – so modern, intelligent and progressive! “Christopher Wells,
civilian co-chair of the EPS Hate and Bias Crime Unit's LGBTQ (lesbian, gay,
bisexual, trans-identified, and queer) liaison committee, explained the
message: ‘Hate impacts the victim, the perpetrator and the wider
community.’ “
And more:
“Mayor Stephen Mandel then handed the ceremony over to openly gay city
Councillor Michael Phair to read the official proclamation, which called for
the growth of harmonious relationships between people regardless of
sexual orientation.”
Wonderful.
Once again, congratulations. |

Alberta smoking ban gets Tory OK
- Now let’s test this noble intent with this piece about the upcoming, total
smoking ban in Alberta, which not only will forbid smoking anywhere, but
even remove cigarettes from convenience stores, forbid their display, and limit
the sales to specialized liquor control board stores. “ ‘If you want to
denormalize tobacco, if you want to make sure it's socially
unacceptable, you put it in with liquor stores, and you put it
out of the environment near where children hang out.’” Denormalize
tobacco means denormalize smokers. If smokers are “socially
unacceptable”, that means that they are to be hated. But if they are
to be hated, that is promotion of hate, which is a hate crime. So,
Canadian governments are promoting hate crimes for which they declare
zero tolerance – ergo, Canadian governments are criminals by their
own definition. But they are criminals for other reasons too –
specifically, because they are promoting public fraud by knowingly giving
false information to the public on the effects on health of active and
passive smoking – thus they are twice criminals. Are Canadian smokers
willing to be represented to the world by governments like that? And what
are they prepared to do about that? |

"Progressive" Kriss Worthington
enjoys slapping smokers around. |
|
May 21
[04:00 GMT]
–
Clearing out the riff-raff
– Telegraph
Avenue in Berkeley California for decades has been a thorn in the side of the
"progressive" university community. At times it resembles Calcutta with
beggars clogging sidewalks, the stench of urine rising from doorways and alleys
and an air of squalor intimidating potential shoppers from sampling the exotic
wares of merchants trying to make a living in what should be a dynamic
crossroads of academia and commerce. Because the "homeless" are the
progressive left's sacred cows, the Berkeley power structure has bent over
backward to accommodate them, even though many are drunk or on drugs as they
harass law-abiding citizens traversing the avenue. The key to the dilemma
of providing the public order demanded by businesses and taxpayers while
maintaining the "progressive" and "compassionate" mantle that the ideologues who
run the city enwrap themselves has been found; ban smoking on the streets.
Swigging rot gut vodka, high on meth and defecating behind parked cars is okay
as long as no tobacco smoke wafts over the sidewalks. Initial reaction to
the sidewalk smoking ban from the city council has been enthusiastic.
"I don't see anyone on the council voting against it,'' said Councilman
Kriss Worthington. "In fact, it's possible that some council members would
ban smoking throughout the entire city."
Worthington, however, would be highly indignant if the proposal to improve
Telegraph Avenue included provisions outlawing people from lounging supine
on the sidewalk. That would be cruel and would run counter to the loving
atmosphere that Berkeley cultivates. In the pipedreams that define Berkeley
thought banning smoking is all that need be done to transform the avenue
into a west coast version of classical Athens. If the ban fails to produce
the desired results, as it will, at least the city council and mayor can
congratulate themselves on showing how tough they are on an issue that
obsesses the ruling class.
Councilman
Kriss Worthington, who many times has shown how butch he can be beating up
smokers, is a gay man who is out and proud. He claims to know first hand
how those who are outside the mainstream can be marginalized and demonized.
He says he will not put up with discrimination against minorities. His
liberalism, however, draws the line with smokers. There is no policy too
harsh for these vermin. Ridding the world of them is the right thing to
do. Hatred towards them is appropriate and necessary. It's likely that
Californians will be voting on a state constitutional amendment that
explicitly bans marriage between members of the same sex. Worthington will
be campaigning vociferously against such an amendment. He will be
screeching against intolerance, shrieking for inclusiveness and issuing
anathemas against bigotry. Why would any fair minded voter believe a word
he says and why would anyone vote to please this hypocrite?

Don’t get
hooked by the National Health Services trash: smoke right in its face instead
– Yes, clearly the gloves are off in England—all the way. The Advertising
Standards Authority has just forbidden hate antitobacco propaganda circulated by
the NHS, depicting violent images that were frightening children. Once again
the “public health” rabble demonstrates its colours and intentions to lie about the effects
of active and passive smoking, to instigate hatred and destroy personal
self-esteem without being accountable to anyone.
This kind of
graphic violence deserves no respect whatsoever. It is yet another glaring
demonstration of the grasp of a contemptible mafia that abuses public money
without any popular mandate. It is good news that the Advertising
Standards Authority has blocked the ads. While any way to block the activity of
“public health” in this shameful incarnation is good and licit and must be done, the ads should have been stopped
on even more serious grounds:
public fraud
and hate incitement. In different times of balance and common sense, the people
at the NHS would be severely punished for what they are doing—on
both legal and moral bases. But now the reprobates sit in the button chambers of power and call
their
victims garbage. If you think that these words are strong, think again
while you are
looking these pictures.
