There are two channels available
through my cable providers which I occasionally watch. One of them
is the Senate and the other The House of Representatives. Generally,
when I happen to click on one of these channels, I quickly change to
a more educational or entertaining channel.
Yesterday, I watched The House of
Representatives channel for about 30 minutes. As a tax paying
citizen, I thought I should be somewhat knowledgeable regarding the
work of our elected officials.
I will not make the mistake of
watching that channel again! The whole half hour was dedicated to
passing, rejecting, or amending a resolution or law regarding
preserving the symbols of Christmas. The main debate was between a
group which had written a proposal which addressed the Christian
theology and a group which wanted to attach an amendment which
included other theologies.
It was very humorous. Each of the
speakers would start their arguments with something like, "I totally
agree with the intentions of Gentle lady X or Gentleman Y, I know
they are approaching the subject with a pure heart, BUT".. There was
no action taken regarding the discussion. After all was said and
done, a lot was said and nothing done.
The really funny (or sad) thought
that I took away from watching the program was that I have always
assumed the rights they were arguing about were rights guaranteed us
by the constitution.
I then switched to The O'Reilly
Factor and O'Reilly was recommending the listeners boycott any store
which says "Happy Holidays" or "Seasons Greetings" instead of "Merry
Christmas".
I turned off the T.V., poured myself
an eggnog, lit up a cigarette, and pondered what I had just seen.
It is just 10 days until Christmas.
This is a time of goodwill, good cheer, and peace on earth!
Before I retired, I met many
"Nitpickers" in the business and education field. The definition of
"nitpicker" I learned is "An incompetent supervisor who feels he/she
must find something wrong in order to be worthy of his/her position
of leadership".
I was appalled by the insignificance
of the issues our political leaders and commentators address.
Analyzing this problem, I think I
have come up with an excuse for their behavior.
Since T.V. became available, there
has been a movie called "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas".
My theory is these people fell asleep
before the program ended, and consequently, feel that Christmas is
endangered. I believe if they watched it one more time and stayed
awake to see the ending, they would realize that Christmas was
returned. And besides, I don't really think there is a Grinch, and
even if there is one, he has brought Christmas back every time he
took it, so far.
Regarding saying Merry Christmas, I
recommend those having problems regarding salutations listen to the
song "What a Wonderful World".
One of the verses goes something like
this, "I see friends walking by saying how do you do; they're really
saying 'I love you'".
We need to say, "how do you do" more.
Merry Christmas to all!!
