On Friday December 9, 2005, the
little European kingdom of Denmark moved a step closer to smoking prohibition.
Pipe smoking minister of Health, Lars Loekke Rasmussen, announced three
different models, one is a total prohibition, one is like the british model
(smoking in pubs) and thirdly one involving seperate areas, ventilation and
smoking rooms.
Surprising to many readers will
be that one major hotel and restauratuers organisation (HORESTA) and the waiters
trade union (RBF) are in favor of blanket prohibition! Yes, you read it
correctly. But the waiters organization have probably been involved in this
<http://www.smokeatwork.org/> smoker progrom network, financed in part by the EU,
so that is what can be expected. You will notice the British trade union TUC is
the coordinator of this EU smoker pogrom division.
The left side of parliament
wants prohibition. Social Democratic (Labour) Heath Speaker, a female smoker by
the name Lone Møller, says smokers must waiver their rights in order to protect
workers against the dangers of ETS. On the right side of parliament, the
government is more careful. Birthe Skaarup, female health speaker of the Danish
Peoples Party supporting the government, and speaker of the parliamentary health
commision, says it is more important that we can all exist in society, including
smokers. Birthe does not smoke, by the way.
The Danish Lung Association,
smelling new members as a result of the fray, have launched a smoker free
restaurants list on their web site, so that smoker pogromists can go to smoker
free places. There are currently 20 restaurants on their list. They have
forgotten Mc Donalds, which went smoker free several months ago.
Counter to my previous
expectations, we are probably going to see a very heated up and whipped up
inquisation against smokers in Denmark in 2006.
