On Friday December 9, 2005, thelittle European kingdom of Denmark moved a step closer to smoking prohibition.Pipe smoking minister of Health, Lars Loekke Rasmussen, announced threedifferent models, one is a total prohibition, one is like the british model(smoking in pubs) and thirdly one involving seperate areas, ventilation andsmoking rooms.
Surprising to many readers willbe that one major hotel and restauratuers organisation (HORESTA) and the waiterstrade union (RBF) are in favor of blanket prohibition! Yes, you read itcorrectly. But the waiters organization have probably been involved in this<http://www.smokeatwork.org/> smoker progrom network, financed in part by the EU,so that is what can be expected. You will notice the British trade union TUC isthe coordinator of this EU smoker pogrom division.
The left side of parliamentwants prohibition. Social Democratic (Labour) Heath Speaker, a female smoker bythe name Lone Møller, says smokers must waiver their rights in order to protectworkers against the dangers of ETS. On the right side of parliament, thegovernment is more careful. Birthe Skaarup, female health speaker of the DanishPeoples Party supporting the government, and speaker of the parliamentary healthcommision, says it is more important that we can all exist in society, includingsmokers. Birthe does not smoke, by the way.
The Danish Lung Association, smelling new members as a result of the fray, have launched a smoker freerestaurants list on their web site, so that smoker pogromists can go to smokerfree places. There are currently 20 restaurants on their list. They haveforgotten Mc Donalds, which went smoker free several months ago.
Counter to my previousexpectations, we are probably going to see a very heated up and whipped upinquisation against smokers in Denmark in 2006.
