"THROUGH ITS new Smoke-Free Homes initiative, the Boston Public Health Commission hopes to further decrease smoking in Boston by encouraging private, multi-unit buildings to ban smoking indoors and outdoors near windows, entrances, and ventilation units."

"But the commission must also take steps to ensure that no long-time residents are evicted simply because they smoke. While landlords and condo boards can be empowered to impose conditions on smoking, they should stop short of banning it retroactively, unless there is a clearly proven health risk to a neighbor."

Clearly proven health risk is the key. There is no clinical evidence that second hand smoke is harmful to anyone, epidemiological studies do not prove causation. Tyrants and fanatics on condo boards should not be empowered to determine what goes on behind closed doors. To give them this power is a huge mistake.
