E-cigarettes could one day be regulated as an over-the-counter drug. FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said Wednesday the agency is considering this option. The agency is re-evaluating and modernizing its approach to the development and regulation of nicotine replacement therapy products to assist smokers in quitting. This includes systems that go beyond nicotine gum, patches and lozenges, which have traditionally been used.

Starting April 1st, 2018, all sites will adopt a smoke free policy for every type of smoking. This is all to be in accordance with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s new smoke free housing rule.

FDA Sued

Several major public health groups sued the Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday for delaying certain rules for electronic cigarettes and cigars, saying that consumers as a result will be exposed for years to “lethal and addictive components” in tobacco products.

Rhode Island

Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo is proposing an outrageous 80% wholesale tax on vapor products as part of the state’s FY2019 budget.

Considering that a 40% wholesale tax enacted in Pennsylvania has wiped out more than a third of the vapor businesses there, Gov. Raimondo’s 80% tax must be stopped.

Japan

A proposed amendment to the law promoting public health &mdash; featuring measures against passive smoking &mdash; includes so many loopholes that it&rsquo;s doubtful whether the steps will serve their stated purpose. The legislation for the first time provides for fines for people who violate the tightened regulations on indoor smoking in public spaces. But, after a compromise with the tobacco lobby within the Liberal Democratic Party, people are still free to smoke inside a majority of eating/drinking establishments &mdash; a major setback from the health ministry&rsquo;s original plan to ban indoor smoking in all public spaces in principle.

Italy

Use of e-cigarettes in the world is growing continuously. However, Europe is falling behind. It is essential that Europe exploits the potential of this technology to reduce the impact of smoking on European Public Health. For this reason, the Italian Anti-Smoking League (Lega Italiana Anti Fumo – LIAF), hosted by MEP Giovanni La Via (former Chair of the ENVI Committee), is bringing experts and policymakers to the European Parliament to discuss the benefits of electronic cigarettes. The event takes place on 20 March 2018 at 12.30 p.m. and will allow experts to exchange views on the potential of e-cigarettes to help reshape European health.

Nicotine Causes Fat

A new study published by University of California at San Diego conducted studies in rats that claim nicotine causes fat in the liver.&nbsp; Needless to say, they didn’t seem to have any problem with nicotine in the patch, gum and nasal spray but they have a problem with e-cigarettes.&nbsp; Nor do they mention that nicotine is a natural substance found in Vegatables.&nbsp; <br type="_moz" />
