A French bar owner has gone on a hunger strike to protest the country’s new smoking ban.
Joel Lailler was fined for failure to prevent smoking in his bar. He has closed his business and resorted to a hunger strike in desperate hope this may win a reprieve to restore his ruined livelihood. Will the authorities listen? The hunger strike is a grand gesture but it will take more than that to break the back of anti-smoking. The Healthist psychology is quintessentially elitist and utterly inhumane. Healthism will be destroyed only by massive force. We wish this bar owner well but appeals to compassion are unlikely to impress the empowered authorities. Victims’ pleas make sadists laugh.
