President Obama has issued an executive order to establish a council for "national prevention, health promotion, and public health".
President Barack Obama has exercised his executive privilege to establish the "National Prevention, Health Promotion, and Public Health" council.

The new council’s duties will include providing "recommendations to the President and the Congress concerning the most pressing health issues confronting the United States and changes in Federal policy to achieve national wellness, health promotion, and public health goals, including the reduction of tobacco use, sedentary behavior, and poor nutrition."

Public health laws regarding matters such as smoking, calorie displays, and zoning restrictions, etc, are unfortunately becoming a national trend. Generally, such laws are still ultimately created on a state and local level. While the president’s executive order does not impose any new laws or regulations, it likely represents a first step at imposing such restrictions on a nationwide, federal level. The council established by the president is designed to provide just such recommendations to both the president and Congress.

President Obama’s order also includes a recommendation for "science-based initiatives to achieve the measurable goals of the Healthy People 2020."

The goals of "Healthy People 2020" are available in the PDF document provided here. The goals listed in the document are rather non-specific. They include recommendations to "decrease" this and "increase" that. Nonetheless, one can rest assured that the president’s executive order will amount to only more "nudging", nagging and bullying of a supposedly free people.

The president’s executive order is available at the link below.
